The Pine County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday reported that human remains have been found that may be those of Kenneth Scott Kleppen, a 22-year-old Sandstone man who went missing in March 2015.

The sheriff's office said members of a search group called United Legacy were looking for signs of Kleppen when they found the human bones in a remote area on Saturday.

Deputies confirmed the bones were of human origin, and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was contacted to assist in processing the scene. The bones were transported to the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office in Ramsey, Minn., for analysis.

The sheriff's office said they are waiting for positive identification of the bones before any more information is released, but said foul play is not suspected at this time.

Kleppen left his residence on March 3, 2015, in his vehicle, which was located in Robinson Park in Pine County two days later. Authorities searched the area and reported on March 19, 2015, that "Kleppen has not been located and authorities are concerned for his welfare," a sheriff's office statement at the time noted. It was not made clear why the sheriff's office waited two weeks to make the case public.
