Discoveries of 2 bodies in water at Central Park likely a grisly ‘coincidence’: chief
POSTED 8:23 AM, MAY 10, 2017, BY CHRIS BRITO AND SAMANTHA TATA, UPDATED AT 11:46AM, MAY 10, 2017

CENTRAL PARK — A body was found in the pond at Central Park Wednesday morning, the second time in as many days that a corpse was found floating in a body of water at the park, police said.

There’s “no criminality right now to show that it’s anything more than a coincidence,” Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said.

In both cases, a maintenance worker at the park made the grisly discovery. Neither body showed obvious signs of trauma, Boyce said.

The body of a man in his 30s was found floating inside Swan Lake, near 59th Street and East Drive, on Wednesday morning.

Citing preliminary information, Boyce said it appears the body had been in the lake for a week or two, at most. Detectives have tentatively identified him based on an ID found inside his pants pocket, though that name is not being released yet, Boyce said.

It was the second time in two days that a body was discovered inside the iconic greenspace.

A maintenance worker on Tuesday morning found a naked body floating in the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, a 106-acre decommissioned reservoir, near Central Park West and West 90th Street.

The body, believed to be that of a man between 20 and 30 years old, was so badly decomposed that detectives have not yet been able to secure an identification, Boyce said.

In that case, the body may have been in the water for over a month, Boyce said.

The last time a body was found in Central Park was in 2015, Boyce said, calling this week’s discoveries “unusual.”

CENTRAL PARK — Police identified the person whose body was found floating in a Central Park lake last week as a 36-year-old homeless man.

The man, identified as Anthony McAfee, was found dead in Swan Lake, in the southeastern corner of Central Park by Fifth Avenue and East 59th Street, by a park staffer on the morning of May 10. It was the second body found in two days in the park, police said.

McAfee, who was homeless, had ID on him, police said last week.

His body may have been in the water for one or two weeks and his eye was damaged by "obviously turtles or some wildlife," according to Robert Boyce, the NYPD's chief of detectives.

There have been no arrests and the investigation is ongoing, although investigators don't suspect any criminality since his body didn't have trauma other than his eye.

The Medical Examiner's office said it still had to determine the cause of death.

Police have not yet identified the first man whose body was found in the park's reservoir the day before on May 9.

The circumstances of that unidentified man's death were also unclear, but Boyce said the body had been there for about a month.

There was nothing to indicate that the two deaths were related, police said.https://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20170515/u...-anthony-mcafee
