Possible human remains found in concrete near Lake Mead

Police are investigating after remains were found encased in concrete Tuesday morning near Nelson’s Landing at Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

The encased remains were covered with a tarp and dirt, the lake’s spokeswoman, Christie Vanover, said. They were found about 9:50 a.m. in a desert area just south of the popular cliff-jumping site.

“Employees working near Aztec Wash observed a foul smell and discovered a partially exposed tarp and reported it,” Vanover said in a statement Tuesday.

The Metropolitan Police Department’s homicide unit was advised, but because of the concrete, both Metro and park rangers were trying to determine whether the remains were human as of 5 p.m.

“We do not know what we have at this point,” an officer said at the scene.

The Clark County coroner’s office is assisting in the identification process.

Late Tuesday afternoon, police were blocking the entrance to Eagle Wash Road, which leads to Nelson’s Landing. Numerous park rangers and Metro officers were at the scene.

Las Vegas resident Curtis Gaul said he came out to the Nelson’s Landing area about 1 p.m. to kayak, “since it’s a nice, beautiful day.”

When he arrived, he noticed a few vehicles — at least one that looked like a park ranger’s — and had to turn around. But three hours later, on his way back to Las Vegas, the same scene was flooded with more vehicles, more crime scene investigators and several more park rangers.

“It’s unfortunate that something like that happened,” Gaul said. “It is a very remote place out here. That’s part of the reason why I came out here — because it is very remote and far away from a lot of things. It’s kind of shocking and unnerving.”

Man arrested after remains found near Lake Mead
By Michael Shoro Las Vegas Review-Journal
May 15, 2017 - 1:16 am

Las Vegas police arrested a man on a murder charge after possible human remains were found encased in concrete earlier this month near Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Edward Bedrosian, 54, was booked Saturday into Clark County Detention Center on a single count of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon, jail and court records show.

Metropolitan Police Department documents implicate Bedrosian in the investigation. The remains were found covered with a tarp and dirt May 2, the lake’s spokeswoman, Christie Vanover, said at the time. They were found about 9:50 a.m. in a desert area just south of popular cliff-jumping site Nelson’s Landing.

The Clark County coroner’s office hadn’t yet identified the remains or released a cause or manner of death as of Sunday morning.

Court records also identify Bedrosian as Edward Bedrusian and Edward Coleman.

Docs: Suspect revealed motive after remains found encased in concrete in park

LAS VEGAS -- A 54-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder after the discovery of human remains encased in concrete in a remote part of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, police in Las Vegas say.

Edward Bedrusian was ordered held without bail Tuesday on a charge of first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon, reports the Las Vegas Review Journal. His attorney, Patricia Erickson, told the paper she did not have any information about the allegations.

The concrete and remains were found May 2, covered with a tarp and dirt after park employees noticed a foul smell in a desert area near the Colorado River cliff-jumping site Nelson's Landing.

The Clark County coroner says identification of the remains and a cause of death is pending. But according to an arrest report obtained by CBS affiliate KLAS, officials have identified the victim as Jon Ernest Gomez. Bedrusian allegedly admitted he killed Gomez, who went by the nickname "Rabbit," on Nov. 28 last year by hitting him in the head with a sledgehammer and shooting him in the head, the documents say.

Bedrusian allegedly told friends Gomez had held him hostage for a few days in his own home, and he killed him when he was trying to escape, the documents say. He then allegedly buried the remains in the recreation area.

Bedrusian allegedly sold the truck he used to transport the body, but police were able to locate it and found blood in the trunk. Police also searched Bedrusian's home, were more blood evidence was found, the station reports.

Police say Bedrusian also uses the last names Bedrosian and Coleman. He is due back in court on June 13.

LAKE MEAD MURDER VICTIM IDENTIFIED
Suspect's Arrest Report: Revenge Possible Motive By Glen A. Meek May 16, 2017 1:39 PmLocal News

A man charged with murder in connection with human remains found in the Lake Mead Recreation Area may have killed out of revenge, the suspect’s arrest report suggests.

Edward Bedrusian, 54, is accused of killing Jon Ernest Gomez, covering the body with concrete and leaving the remains under a tarp near Aztec Wash. In Bedrusian’s arrest report, detectives piece together a picture of the crime from interviews with several people who knew or had contact with Gomez and Bedrusian over the past seven months.

Bedrusian is alleged to have admitted killing Gomez, either by giving him a “hot shot” of drugs or by hitting him with a sledgehammer and shooting him with a gun. The apparent motive, according to investigators: revenge for Gomez having held Bedrusian hostage in his own home and having stolen his property.

Gomez, also known by the moniker “Rabbit”, was first reported missing by his girlfriend back in December. The victim’s girlfriend says he told her before he went missing that he was going to see “Ed”.

In January, police had a chance encounter with Bedrusian, when someone reported a couple acting suspiciously in a car. Police responded, and arrested Bedrusian for cocaine possession. Later, during the murder investigation, police went looking for the car Bedrusain was in at the time of the drug arrest in case it had been used to transport the victim’s body. Investigators discovered the vehicle had been sold at auction from a tow yard. The new owners were tracked down, and they allowed police to search the vehicle. Blood evidence was found in the trunk.

When Bedrusian was arrested for the murder, he confessed to the killing, his arrest report says. According to the report, Bedrusain admitted hitting Gomez twice with a sledgehammer then shooting him in the head.

Bedrusian is being held in the Clark County Detention Center on a charge of murder with a deadly weapon. His bid for bail Tuesday was denied.
