Charleston police responded to the City Marina on Lockwood Drive earlier this week following a report of what appeared to be a human foot discovered on the dock.

According to an incident report filed May 1 by the Charleston Police Department, a woman notified employees at the marina of an abandoned shoe that had been sitting on the dock for approximately six days. Arriving on scene, police found a teal Adidas sneaker with white stripes between dock J20 and J22. Inside the men’s size-nine shoe, investigators found a black sock and a possible human bone “sticking out the top,” the report states.

At that time, the Charleston County Coroner’s Office took control of the shoe and its contents for further examination. County Coroner Rae Wooten confirmed Thursday afternoon that the shoe contained a human foot, but no other information could be determined from the remains.

In working to unravel the mystery of the foot’s owner, Wooten said that her office and the Charleston police are checking missing persons reports and reports of boat accidents, but no connections have been made. Wooten cautioned that just because a men’s shoe was discovered, the sex of the person to whom the foot belongs remains undetermined. She added that the shoe was found in good condition and doesn’t appear to have spent much time in the water.

According to Wooten, little is known about the possible identity of the person to whom the foot belongs, but anyone with information is asked to contact the Coroner’s Office at 843-746-4030. Charleston police ask that anyone with information call the department at 843-743-7200 or contact Crimestoppers at 843-554-1111.

Wooten said that authorities believe that the shoe was retrieved from the water the previous week and appears to have been discarded on the dock, but it is unknown from where the foot may have washed into the marina.

“There’s no way to say where it came from. We just know where we found it,” Wooten said.

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
Lowcountry law enforcement investigating a severed foot found skeletal remains near the Citadel Wednesday morning.

Officials with the Charleston Police Department say their department's harbor patrol and Charleston County sheriff's deputies were searching a marsh area of The Citadel when they found what appeared to be skeletal remains.

"They began the search at 10:30 a.m. this morning and the remains were found about 11:30 a.m.," CPD officials said.

Officials with The Citadel said the officers who found the remains were looking for a body in connection to a severed foot that was found in the area of the Charleston Marina last week.

"The search was being done in reference to a human right foot found May 1, 2017, encased in an Adidas shoe at the Charleston City Marina," Charleston police officials confirmed Wednesday afternoon.

The Charleston County Coroner's Office has determined that a severed human foot and skeletal remains discovered earlier this month belong to a 20-year-old North Charleston man reported missing in December.

Coroner Rae Wooten on Monday said DNA tests identified the remains of Everett Middleton Jr. His cause and manner of death are undetermined pending further investigation.

On May 1, Charleston police were called to the Charleston City Marina after a right foot in an Adidas sneaker was discovered on a dock. Employees at the marina were notified that the shoe had been sitting on the dock for about six days.

Investigators believed the shoe and foot inside were floating amid debris in the marina for some time, Wooten said. Someone cleaning the debris threw the shoe onto the dock.

Charleston Police Harbor Patrol and Charleston County sheriff’s deputies searched a marsh area near The Citadel's campus and discovered what appeared to be skeletal human remains on May 10.

Middleton, who suffered from schizophrenia, was reported missing to North Charleston police on Dec. 23. Police said his mother was out of town Dec. 21 when he called her saying he needed help. She advised him to go the hospital, and he said he walked out of Medical University Hospital.

Middleton's mother told police he had been spotted several times near the Stay Over Lodge and Siesta Motor Lodge, both in North Charleston.
