Police say remains found in a canal pipe were Hollywood woman Linda Trischitta, Ihosvani Rodriguez Sun Sentinel 10:31 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010 Palm Beach County Crime Facebook Twitter Share HOLLYWOOD Police confirmed Friday that human remains found in a shallow canal near Interstate 95 and Hollywood Boulevard belonged to a registered nurse whose family reported her missing in May. Sharon Elson, 45, was last seen paying her rent and leaving her apartment at 2522 Lincoln St. in Hollywood on the afternoon of May 11, officials and family members said. Her front door was unlocked and her personal belongings were undisturbed, including her car, keys and cell phone, Hollywood Police Lt. Manny Marino said. Though there were no signs of foul play, investigators consider Elson's disappearance to be suspicious. Marino said Elson was a petite woman, just 5 feet tall and 120 pounds, who worked for Humana Insurance in Doral in Miami-Dade County. Two months after her disappearance, what appeared to be bones were discovered in shallow water near the canal by people fishing there. Hollywood police divers recovered additional remains in the water July 19, as well as from an underground pipe that feeds the canal. The bones were confirmed to be human by the Broward County Medical Examiner's Office, and this week, were identified as Elson's by an out of state lab. This has been a tragic week for the Elson family. Sharon Elson was the youngest of eight children borne by Caroline Elson in Jamaica. The 86-year-old matriarch died there on Thursday without knowing what had happened to her daughter. In 2004, Barry University awarded Sharon Elson a bachelor of science degree in nursing, a school spokeswoman said. Like her two siblings in the U.S., Herrol Elson of Kendall and Winnifred Elson of Miramar, she was a state licensed registered nurse. Winnifred Elson said her sister, who was known for cooking excellent curried goat, was very responsible and would not have taken off without telling anyone. "She was not a person to do this to her family," Winnifred Elson said. Before their sister's remains were identified, Winnifred Elson said, "There were some good days, but a lot of bad days. We kept saying to ourselves that she would just show up." When relatives last saw Sharon Elson at a family gathering a few weeks before her disappearance, her sister said, "Nothing seemed strange. She was her happy self." Her brother suspects someone murdered his baby sister, whom he called religious. She never married and had broken up with a boyfriend 18 months ago, her brother said. "Sharon could swim," Herrol Elson said. "She would not have drowned herself unless somebody held her in that water. I don't believe for a minute that she would kill herself." When Herrol Elson's wife died, he said Sharon lived with him and helped raise his daughters while she attended college. "She was the sweetest person to anybody you could ever find," he said. "She was a small-framed person and when she would go out with the girls, people thought the three were sisters because they got along so well." He says he is haunted by Sharon's final moments, and still has many questions. "I wonder, how did they do it? Did she suffer?" Herrol Elson says. "I have no idea how her body ended up in that pipe. I don't want somebody to get away with murder." No cause of death has been determined in the case, which police say is still unsolved. "I think somebody saw something, or knew something," Herrol Elson says. "No matter how minor they think it is, they should come forward." Hollywood police ask anyone with information about Sharon Elson's disappearance to call 954-967-4357 or Broward Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 954-493-8477. Crime Stoppers will pay $1,000 for any tips that lead to an arrest.http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/crime--l...pBo1V6IQO4TRsL/ |
