Search warrants filed Monday show investigators are searching the Facebook account of Dayshaun Kent, the man Merle-Perez was living with when she was last seen on March 3. The search is also in relation to credit card fraud. As WSLS 10 previously reported, Kent was seen in video footage using Perez's debit card at the Nishi Food Mart on Plantation Road and at a SunTrust Bank after she went missing. Police searched her cellphone, driver's license and her wallet. The investigation continued last week when state police divers and Roanoke detectives searched Tinker Creek. The 38-year-old was reported missing by her family on March 27. |

By Web Staff | Posted: Thu 11:58 AM, Jul 27, 2017 | Updated: Thu 12:52 PM, Jul 27, 2017 ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) An active investigation is underway along Tinker Creek. A WDBJ7 crew captured images of the activity near Radford Road in Northeast Roanoke. Roanoke City Police say they are investigating "the potential of human remains being concealed in an outdoor location." Officers have been working in that area since 5 PM Wednesday. Roanoke Police Evidence Technicians, as well as the Office of the Medical Examiner personnel, are currently collecting physical evidence from an area near Tinker Creek, according to Roanoke City Police Captain Eric Charles. The area where this police investigation is taking place is the same area where a missing woman named Edme Merle-Perez lived before she disappeared in March. Police have not said whether their work is related to Merle-Perez's case. http://www.wdbj7.com/content/news/BREAKING...-436980343.html |

http://www.roanoke.com/news/crime/roanoke/...7775e9cf90.html Man charged with burying human remains and using missing woman's credit cards By Neil Harvey 17 hrs ago A 23-year-old man faces criminal charges related to skeletal remains recently discovered in northeast Roanoke, and prosecutors have said they strongly believe the case involves a woman who disappeared more than four months ago. Dayshaun Keith Kent was indicted Monday on charges of improper disposal of a body, as well as credit card theft and credit card fraud. Roanoke Commonwealth’s Attorney Donald Caldwell said the credit cards that Kent is accused of stealing belong to Edme Merle-Perez, 38, who was reported missing March 27. He is charged with using her cards after that date. The remains in the case were discovered late last month in a heavily wooded area near Tinker Creek, beyond a dead end in the 2700 block of Radford Road. Merle-Perez’s home is in the 2600 block of Radford Road. Police began searching that area on July 26 and found the remains that week. Although the state medical examiner’s office is still trying to determine both the identity of the body and the cause of death, Caldwell said numerous factors, including medical evidence, raise the potential for a connection. “Given the proximity of the skeletal remains to her last known address, as well as a surgical screw in one of her lower extremities, it would seem to suggest that this is, in fact, Ms. Merle-Perez,” Caldwell said Monday. “The remains were buried in a shallow depression, not very deeply, and with the use of cadaver dogs, they were recovered,” he said. “Other evidence indicates that he [Kent] participated in disposing of the body,” Caldwell added. He said he was not sure when they would have a positive identification. Kent, meanwhile, is being held without bail on a matter that appears to be unrelated: He was charged July 31 with two felony counts of animal cruelty leading to death. Roanoke police have said that on April 15, an animal warden responded after a fisherman reported finding two dead cats in a backpack. It was not clear exactly where the bag was found but after an investigation, Kent was arrested. Caldwell said Kent admitted to police that he had drowned the cats. On Monday, Kent did not yet have a court date set for the body disposal or credit card charges, but he is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on the animal cruelty offenses on Sept. 12. |
