The body Boston police recovered on April 9 in the Fenway neighborhood was missing Gloucester man Stephen David Smith, his brother Richard Smith confirmed Tuesday morning.

"You can say it's closure, but it's still awful," Richard said.

Richard Smith said authorities used dental records and possibly DNA to identify the body as Stephen David, the 54-year old Gloucester man who went missing last Aug. 13.

Stephen David Smith's body was recovered from the Muddy River in the area of 1200 Boylston St. in Boston's Fenway neighborhood, near the Victory Gardens, by Boston police and park rangers. Boston police and the state medical examiner's office have not confirmed the identification or released a cause of death.

Richard Smith said police — he wasn't sure if it was Gloucester or Boston — informed his brother Robert last week of the identification.

Robert Smith, who held power of attorney for Stephen David, was the last family member to see his brother alive on Aug. 13, 2016.

Robert Smith had stopped by his brother's Dodge Street apartment on that Saturday morning to check on him and give him a little spending money.

The family reported Stephen David missing on Aug. 19 after a home health care worker repeated a scheduled visit to his Dodge Street apartment on a number of occasions without finding him home.

As Gloucester police tried to track Stephen David's whereabouts — checking with hospitals, friends and colleagues — the family established a Facebook page in his full name and added his name to the online lost persons registry at lostnmissing.org.

As the formal investigation stalled, the family even hired a private investigator to try to pick up Stephen David's trail. But Stephen David's whereabouts remained a mystery.

The family said the last activity on Stephen David's cell phone on Aug. 13 placed him in the area of Boston's North Station. After that, it was just silence.

"We'll probably never know how long he was there or what really happened," Richard Smith said.

The family, he said, is doing as well as can be expected.

"We've had a little while to process (the possibilities)," he said.
