DEORR’S FATHER DISPUTES CLAIMS IN NEW VIDEO THAT HE COULD HURT HIS CHILD
IDAHO FALLS 1 Updated at 3:02 pm, February 27th, 2017 By: Nate Eaton,

IDAHO FALLS — The father of missing Idaho Falls toddler DeOrr Kunz Jr. says he would never hurt or do anything to his child, despite what his ex-girlfriend says in a newly released video.

Vernal DeOrr Kunz spoke with EastIdahoNews.com on Monday after learning Jessica Mitchell, his ex-girlfriend, made claims about him in a nearly eight-minute long Investigation Discovery video.

“I believe Deorr’s father could have hurt him,” Mitchell says in the video. “He’s living his life like it’s nothing and I’m falling apart every day.”

Mitchell and Kunz were camping with Mitchell’s grandfather, Robert Walton, and Isaac Reinwand, a friend of Walton’s, at Timber Creek Campground in Lemhi County in July 2015 when DeOrr vanished.

After numerous searches of the campground and surrounding areas, no clues of DeOrr’s whereabouts have ever been found.

In January 2016, former Lemhi County Sheriff Lynn Bowerman named Kunz and Mitchell as suspects in DeOrr’s disappearance, but the parents were never charged or arrested.

“I would never harm my child,” Kunz tells EastIdahoNews.com Monday. “Nothing about my life is normal anymore. Not a single minute goes by that I don’t try to figure out what happened to my son, and I’ll never ever stop looking for him.”

Mitchell and her mother, Trina Bates Clegg, appear in the Investigation Discovery video and Mitchell maintains she doesn’t know where DeOrr is.

“There is no reason for me to hide anything,” Mitchell says. “I am going to stand up and fight for my son. I did not kill my son. One hundred percent – I did not kill my son.”

The video mentions evidence private investigator Philip Klein claims to have found at the Timber Creek Campground, including blood spatter on DeOrr’s truck.

Clegg questions Klein’s findings.

“If there was true blood of baby Deorr’s on that truck, why were no arrests made?” Clegg says in the video.

When reached for comment Monday, Clegg tells EastIdahoNews.com she “just wants help finding the truth for baby DeOrr.”

The video also addresses polygraph tests Mitchell and Kunz took and failed numerous times, according to Klein.

Mitchell says she failed the tests because “she was a grieving mother.”

Kunz, who was not interviewed in the video, tells EastIdahoNews.com he still believes his son is alive.

“I will never give up hope my son is alive and I will see him again,” Kunz says. “Being his father is the best thing I’ve ever done and will do.”

Lemhi County Sheriff Steve Penner tells EastIdahoNews.com he has no comment on the video and says his office continues to investigate DeOrr’s disappearance.

Toy cars, camo jacket found in Deorr Kunz, Jr. case
KTVB 10:13 PM. MDT July 17, 2016

BOISE -- In a new report released by Klein Investigations and Consulting (KIC), the firm once hired by the family, several items of interest have been found.

Investigators searched the former Idaho Falls residence of Vernal Kunz and Jessica Mitchell, which they had been evicted from for not paying rent.

The report states that the landlord disposed of furniture and clothing that had been left in the home. Investigators were given permission by the landlord to search through the items and found several items of interest, including:

"Four Matchbox cars described previously by the parents as 'missing and they did not know where they were.'

A camo child's jacket similar to being described by both parents as being worn on the day of the event and suggested to be missing with the child.

A credit card used by a family friend with seemingly purchases of items unknown to investigators in testimony.

An insurance tracking device box and instruction package.

The report also states that several thousand dollars is missing from funds raised to help cover the cost to hire private investigators.

Over $29,200 was raised by the public to aide in the investigation.

According to KIC, $20,000 of the money raised was used for investigator and equipment travel and hotel costs.

KIC says they do not know where the remaining $9,201 is.

The six page document also states that KIC "cannot find any person that saw the child go up the mountain either the day of the event - or the evening before" and "therefore are moving our timeline of events back to 5 p.m. the day before the 911 call was made."

After four weeks of investigation, KIC says they "believe that the parents being Vernal Kunz and Jessica Anderson are deceptive with intent to cover up a crime," and that the "investigation now starts regarding an intentional homicide."

Both parents deny the accusations and say they have nothing to hide.

MHI SHERIFF: DEORR CASE IS STILL ‘VERY ACTIVE’

STATEMENT FROM VERNAL KUNZ

Vernal Kunz, the father of DeOrr Kunz Jr., issued the following statement to EastIdahoNews.com in connection to his missing son:

It’s been extremely hard. Not an hour goes by that I don’t think of my amazing little boy.

The unopened Christmas and birthday gifts, the daily thoughts of what happened that day, why and who and what to do or where to look next. It gets extremely frustrating to come up blank.

I miss my son more than anything. I have hope and faith that I will have my son again.

To this day, I do not know what happened on that horrific day on the 10th of July. Most don’t believe that. They just judge what they see on social media, and that’s OK.

One day I will find my son and have him in my arms and prove everyone wrong and live my life once again as a complete man and father.

I love and miss you, Goob. I’ll never give up on you, son.

Till I see you again.

Love,
Daddy

SALMON – It’s been more than 18 months since DeOrr Kunz Jr. vanished while on a camping trip in Leadore.

There has been no sign of the Idaho Falls toddler, who was 2 years old when he disappeared, and nobody has been arrested.

But Lemhi County Sheriff Steve Penner tells EastIdahoNews.com the case is still very active.

“We’re working on this nearly every week,” Penner says. “We’re reviewing old information, receiving new tips and conducting interviews.”

Penner was the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office chief deputy when DeOrr was reported missing in July 2015. He was elected sheriff in November when Lynn Bowerman retired.

Penner was one of the first investigators to respond to the Timber Creek Campground on July 10, 2015 when DeOrr’s mother, Jessica Mitchell, called 911.

“My 2-year-old son … we can’t find him,” Mitchell told a dispatcher around 2:30 p.m. that day. “He was wearing cowboy boots, pajama pants and a camo jacket, and he’s got shaggy blond hair.”

LISTEN | MOTHER’S 911 PHONE CALL RELEASED

Mitchell and her then-boyfriend, Vernal DeOrr Kunz, were camping with Mitchell’s grandfather, Robert Walton, and Isaac Reinwand, a friend of Walton’s.

After numerous searches of the campground and surrounding areas, no clues of DeOrr’s whereabouts have ever been found.

Last January, Bowerman named Kunz and Mitchell as suspects in DeOrr’s disappearance, but the parents were never charged or arrested. They maintain they have nothing to do with their child vanishing.

Penner has spent thousands of hours working on this case in conjunction with the FBI and the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office.

“We’re still getting reports of occasional DeOrr sightings,” Penner says. “We investigate all of them and follow up on any new information that comes in.”

Penner won’t say if he believes there will a break in the case soon, but promises investigators are “pursuing all avenues” and won’t stop until it’s solved.

“We’re working hard. We haven’t forgetten about this,” Penner says.
