The body found Tuesday off Highway 58 has been identified as a Westfir man who was reported missing last month.

David Higgs, 28, was twice reported missing March 2 by his family, making a brief reappearance between reports that day. At the time, the sheriff’s office said, Higgs did not appear to be in distress when he left the family home a second time and never returned.

He last was seen walking west on Highway 58 in the Westfir area near Oakridge, the sheriff’s office said.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends as they grieve,” Sheriff’s Sgt. Carrie Carver said Thursday.

The body was found late Tuesday night by a passer-by on the same stretch of highway along the Willamette River bank near milepost 30.

According to Carver, there were no obvious signs of trauma. The sheriff’s office and Lane County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating.
