Restaurant Owner Listed as Missing
POSTED 4:47 PM, JANUARY 27, 2017, BY STACY LANGE, UPDATED AT 04:48PM, JANUARY 27, 2017

OLD FORGE -- A longtime business owner in Old Forge has vanished and police believe he may be in danger.

Their investigation is focused on his family's restaurant that's been in business for decades.

Ghigiarelli's is one of the famous Old Forge pizza restaurants. It would normally be busy on a Friday night, but it's been closed since Thursday. Police say its owner, Robert Baron, was last seen Wednesday night.

There are flowers at the front door of Ghigiarelli's on Main Street in Old Forge and a handwritten sign telling customers that the pizza place is closed for business.

Its owner, Robert Baron, has been missing since Wednesday night. Police say he was last seen dropping his son off at his apartment in the borough.

The investigation seems centered inside the family restaurant. Neighbors say police were there for much of the day Thursday and they were back Friday. Detectives were seen carrying out something that looked like a laptop.

All this has led some to believe Robert Baron may be more than just missing.

"I will say that, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania State Police, we did conduct an investigation looking for potential evidence, again, right now, it's a missing persons case," said Lackawanna County District Attorney Shane Scanlon.

Lackawanna County's D.A. and the chief of police in Old Forge showed us the car Baron was known to be driving -- a 2006 Hyundai Elantra.

"What I would like to say is at this point in time, we don't have any evidence of him being dead. We certainly have not found a body or a deceased person. We are asking that if anyone out in the public has any information or has seen Mr. Baron going back to Tuesday to please give the Lackawanna County Communications Center a call," said Scanlon.

Baron's friends and neighbors of the business say a disappearance is out of character for the father of three who left an impression on other Old Forge business owners.

"The best, the best neighbor you want to meet, always good to us," said Linda Tomlinson of Tomlinson Floral and Gift. "When he moved in, he sent over a couple trays of pizza to greet us, and just so nice. We'd meet him in the back yard and he's just so friendly, nice conversation. We're hoping for the best."

Investigators wouldn't elaborate on any evidence they may have found but told Newswatch 16 given the amount of time he's been gone, they believe Baron may be in danger.

If you have any information about Robert Baron, you are asked to call Old Forge Police at (570) 457-7441, or 911.

The family is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to his whereabouts.

Missing Man’s Car Found, New Information in Search Warrant
POSTED 11:19 AM, JANUARY 30, 2017, BY JIM HAMILL, UPDATED AT 04:53PM, JANUARY 30, 2017

OLD FORGE – Investigators have found the car of a Lackawanna County man missing since last week, and search warrants reveal new information about the case.

Robert Baron, a restaurant owner in Old Forge, has been missing since last week.

Family members of Robert Baron were emotional five days after his disappearance. Friends organized a search effort in the Old Forge area hoping to find some sign that Baron is safe or at the very least give the family some closure.

Dozens of volunteers then headed out looking for anything that could help track down the owner of Ghigiarelli's, a restaurant where court documents indicate a bloody attack took place before Baron went missing. That search wrapped up around 4 p.m. with no word on if anything was found.

"We're going on our fifth day of no one having contact with Mr. Baron, and we're concerned with his safety," said Lackawanna County District Attorney Shane Scanlon.

Police searched the restaurant and found traces of blood, some that had been removed with cleaning supplies. They also found a tooth in a sink as well as a bloody afghan.

Then Sunday, authorities found the car Baron was driving on Howard Street in Old Forge. Blood was also found on a door and inside the vehicle.

"To find out they even found the car is a troubling thing. If they didn't find the car, then we could assume he took a long vacation," said Robert Gaughan.

Police told searchers if they do come across anything, to make sure they leave it alone not to taint any potential evidence in this missing persons case.

"I know it's been days. We have cold weather. With the negative things we've been hearing, it doesn't look good. But we have to have high hopes. But Bobby's a fighter," said family friend Jason Thomas.

According to the search warrant, an employee at Baron's restaurant saw him get multiple phone calls one day last week. Then Baron said, "Don't answer the phone anymore."

Baron is now missing five days and the search for him continues.

"Find Bobby, just got to find him," said Thomas. "A lot of days have gone by, no results, no information, just got to find him."

Baron's family offered a $5,000 reward over the weekend to help find the missing man.

stone-cold mystery is unfolding in Lackawanna County. It involves the owner of a popular Italian restaurant, missing a week now. There are signs a bloody struggle took place in the restaurant before its owner, Robert Baron, went missing. And now his abandoned vehicle has been found. But there is still no sign of the beloved owner of Ghigiarelli's Restaurant in Old Forge, Pa.

According to WNEP-TV, everything about the case seems suspicious. Most especially the traces of blood found in the restaurant that someone had attempted to remove with cleaning supplies. A police search also turned up a tooth in a sink and a bloody afghan, the news station reports, adding:

On Sunday, authorities found the car Baron was driving on Howard Street in Old Forge. Blood was also found on a door and inside the vehicle.

Lackawanna County District Attorney Shane Scanlon said at the time: "We're going on our fifth day of no one having contact with Mr. Baron, and we're concerned with his safety."

On the day the 58-year-old Baron went missing, he received a flurry of phone calls at the restaurant, WNEP reports.

Friends and family have been organizing searches, and have posted a $5,000 reward for information in the case.

But the mystery - and the search and investigation - continue.

Reward for information on missing Old Forge man increased
BY CLAYTON OVER / PUBLISHED: FEBRUARY 16, 2017

OLD FORGE — Among flowers left at the front of Ghigiarelli’s Restaurant on South Main Street, a handwritten message in black marker is penned on a white foam plate.

“Keep the Faith,” it reads.

Wednesday marked three weeks since the owner of the business, 58-year-old Robert Baron, was last seen. Authorities are still investigating tips and conducting interviews about his disappearance, Lackawanna County District Attorney Shane Scanlon said. Law enforcement is still treating Baron’s disappearance as a missing person’s case and are still committing time and resources to the investigation, Scanlon said.

“This is still an absolute priority investigation,” Scanlon said, adding that Old Forge police and his office have police officers and detectives dedicated to the Baron case. “This investigation is just as intense as it was on day one.”

Baron was last seen on Jan. 25 around 11 p.m. His son reported him missing the following morning after the businessman did not respond to a text message, and the son discovered he was not at the pizzeria or an upstairs apartment.

Investigators later found blood, a tooth and other evidence of a possible assault inside the restaurant. Blood traces were also discovered in Baron’s silver Hyundai Elantra sedan, which police located parked in the 100 block of Howard Street on Jan. 29.

That evidence has since been sent to state police crime labs for testing, but investigators here have not received any results yet, Scanlon said Wednesday. Results of such analysis is a long process and takes time, he said.

Local and state police and teams of volunteers conducted extensive searches throughout the borough and into Luzerne County in the weeks after Baron was reported missing. Such large, visible searches are now being scaled back to react to specific tips, Scanlon said. Authorities will also be asking state police for use of its aerial unit to check new locations and recheck areas already searched, he said.

In the meantime, the reward offered for information regarding the case has doubled to $10,000, said Jason Thomas, a family friend. Friends, family and members of the community raised the reward money, he said.

Anyone with information about Baron now have another way to report it to police. Scranton Police Department is lending use of their anonymous tip submission feature on their website, www.scrantonpa.gov/scrantonpd.

Anyone with information can also contact Old Forge police or the Lackawanna County district attorney’s office, both at 570-342-9111.

“We’ve been asking the public for help from the beginning and we’re renewing that request today,” Scanlon said.
