Ruidoso woman still missing; disappeared after senior center potluck
Ruidoso News Reports Published 9:36 a.m. MT Jan. 10, 2017 | Updated 9:44 a.m. MT Jan. 10, 2017

Police in Ruidoso and Alamogordo are still looking for a Ruidoso woman who has been missing since she disappeared during a potluck luncheon at the Ruidoso Senior Center last month.

Micaela Torres-Avila, 37, had gone to the luncheon with her boyfriend, Alamogordo Police officer Christopher Welch and Welch’s mother on Dec. 21. Welch and Torres-Avila shared a home on Paradise Canyon Road.

Welch told Ruidoso police the following day that he last saw her as he was stepping away from their table at the center to get something to drink. When he returned, she was gone.

The incident report said Welch told officers the missing woman was under treatment for anxiety issues and had gone briefly missing in the past but had not stayed away so long.

Torres-Avila has a sister in San Antonio TX who told police she had gotten a call from Torres-Avila on the day of the luncheon in which she said she was upset about something Welch had said to her. But Welch said he recalled nothing from the luncheon that should have prompted Torres-Avila to leave so abruptly.

Ruidoso police made a number of efforts to trace her whereabouts but said Monday that she was still gone as far as they were aware.

Alamogordo Deputy Police Chief Roger Schoolcraft said Welch’s colleagues had also tried to locate her without success.

“I wish we had some good news on that,” he said.
