Authorities say search efforts have proven unsuccessful so far for a Los Angeles couple reported missing late last month after traveling to the Central Coast.

Olivia Hannah Gonzalez, 20, and Brian Fernandez, 21, were headed to Big Sur in December and were supposed to be home in time for Christmas, according to family members, but never showed up.

Authorities say their last known purchase was at Old Cambria Market Place on Main Street in Cambria on Friday, December 23.

Gonzalez's sister was in Cambria a week later handing out flyers with information on the missing couple.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office said it also used a fixed-wing airplane to scan the coast for the couple's car, but did not find anything. Another search was expected to take place Sunday.

Gonzalez and Fernandez were in a 2002 four-door Honda Civic with a California license plate number of 5VUD295. They also had two big dogs with them.

Authorities in Los Angeles said Tuesday the search for the two was continuing.

Authorities in San Luis Obispo County found a tan-colored sedan and a body on Tuesday off the side of Highway 1 north of San Simeon and were investigating whether the wreck involved a missing couple from Los Angeles.

Olivia Hannah Gonzalez, 20, and Brian Fernandez, 21, were on a holiday road trip to Big Sur in a tan sedan. The Los Angeles Police Department said both were reported missing after they did not return on Christmas Day as scheduled and have not been heard from.

The California Highway Patrol received a report about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday that a tan vehicle was found about 325 feet below the steep embankment of the highway near Ragged Point, according to Officer Patrick Seebart, a CHP spokesman.

The location is a rugged spot about 10 miles north of Hearst Castle along the Central Coast. A helicopter crew surveyed the car’s wreckage and spotted the bodies of a human and a dog about 15 feet from the vehicle, Seebart said.

The bodies and the car’s wreckage were resting near the shoreline, authorities said.

Representatives of the San Luis Obispo County coroner’s office were sent to the scene, and by late Tuesday, rescuers had recovered the person’s body as well as the dead dog, Seebart said. The person’s identity was not released pending notification of family.

Throughout the day, crews were slowed by a rainstorm in the area, and the sedan was expected to be hoisted up to the highway on Wednesday after the storm clears.

Authorities have not released the car’s license plate or vehicle identification number.

Gonzalez and Fernandez were last seen Dec. 23 as they left Los Angeles for Big Sur. Fernandez was driving a 2002 four-door tan Honda Civic with California license plate 5VUD295.

Relatives have said the pair were traveling with two dogs.

Gonzalez’s sister, Vanessa Guzman, told KTLA-TV that her husband received a text message from Gonzalez on Dec. 23. The message, sent about 1 p.m., said that the couple were two hours away from Big Sur.

“Then after that, her phone went off at 4 p.m. and [Fernandez’s] phone went off and we haven’t been able to reach them since,” Guzman told the news station.

“I’m trying to stay positive for my family and his, and that they’ll come home.”

BODY FOUND NEAR SAN LUIS OBISPO CRASH SITE IDENTIFIED AS MISSING NORTH HOLLYWOOD WOMAN
By John Gregory and ABC7.com staff
Wednesday, January 04, 2017 05:50PM

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A body found near the scene of a car crash off a cliff in San Luis Obispo was identified as a missing North Hollywood woman, officials confirmed.

San Luis Obispo sheriff's officials said the body is that of 20-year-old Olivia Hannah Gonzalez. She and her boyfriend, Brian Fernandez, 21, have been missing since Dec. 23, when they left for a trip to Big Sur. They were expected to return on Christmas Day.

Authorities said an autopsy was performed on the body on Wednesday, but a cause of death is pending further investigation.

A deceased dog was also found at the scene, described as a light brown Labrador retriever mix, sheriff's officials said.

Gonzalez and Fernandez and two dogs were traveling in a 2002 four-door tan Honda Civic with California license plate 5VUD295.

On Wednesday, California Highway Patrol officials contacted Gonzalez and Fernandez's family to let them know they were investigating a car found over the side of State Route 1 in the San Luis Obispo area.

The car, described by CHP as a tan sedan, was found about 325 feet down a cliff, wedged between rocks near Ragged Point.

Sheriff's officials broke the tragic news to Gonzalez's family on Wednesday. But even before Gonzalez's body was identified, her family members feared the worst.

"I ran upstairs and grabbed my mom, because that's our baby, that's our baby. My sister was like my daughter to me," said Vanessa Guzman, Gonzalez's sister, in tears. "It's heartbreaking for both of the families involved, because you know, they haven't even opened their presents yet. My sister's presents are still under the tree," Guzman said.

Guzman said she wishes her sister never took that spur-of-the-moment trip to Big Sur.

"My heart is just battling right now. I'm trying to stay positive, but with all the news unfolding, it's hard," she said.

A GoFundMe page was created to raise funds for Gonzalez's funeral. It can be found at gofundme.com/36w17fk.

Authorities are continuing to search for more potential victims at the crash site. Officials said it may take several days to retrieve the car and determine who it belongs to.

Police asked anyone with information to contact the LAPD's Missing Persons Unit at (213)996-1800.

Police Search For Boyfriend of Woman Found Dead Near Big Sur Car Wreck
Body of Olivia Gonzalez and the couple’s two dogs were found by wreckage below Pacific Coast Highway.
By Mary Papenfuss

LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT
Olivia Hannah Gonzalez, 20, and Brian Fernandez, 21, went missing Dec. 23.

California police failed again Friday to find the boyfriend of a woman found dead near a mangled car hundreds of feet below Pacific Coast Highway.

Olivia Gonzalez and beau Brian Fernandez of North Hollywood were reported missing at Christmas by family members who were unable to reach them while they were on a road trip together with their two dogs to Big Sur. The bodies of Gonzalez and both dogs were found outside a tan sedan that had crashed 325 feet below the highway along the rugged Pacific coast in central California.

There was no sign of Fernandez. The steep coast and heavy rains hampered the initial search. Dogs, a California Highway Patrol helicopter and an Underwater Search and Recovery Team resumed the hunt for hours Friday — but again found no sign of the missing man. With severe weather expected, the search was suspended until next week.

It’s possible Fernandez’s body was “ejected into the water,” Tony Cipolla, a spokesman for the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office, told the Los Angeles Times. The car came to rest in rocks near the surf line.

Police did recover the car, which is being examined by investigators, who described the case as suspicious to KABC-TV in Los Angeles. Police, however, told other media outlets that foul play was not suspected. Autopsy results on Gonzalez are pending.

Fernandez, 21, and Gonzalez, 20, were last seen Dec. 23 when they left for their holiday trip, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. They were expected to return on Christmas Day.

A passing driver on Highway 1 reported wreckage about 10 miles north of Hearst Castle, near San Simeon, to police Tuesday. The bodies of Gonzalez and the dogs were found outside the crashed car.

Gonzalez’s sister Vanessa Guzman told KTLA-TV in Los Angeles that her husband had received a text from the missing woman the day the couple left, saying they were two hours away from Big Sur. Their phones were turned off or went dead soon after.

Guzman told the Los Angeles Daily News that she had never met Fernandez but had heard from friends that his relationship with her sister was “rocky” and she was “concerned” that they were going on a road trip together.

“The body they found on the rocks is that of my sister, Olivia. She was a beautiful soul,” Guzman wrote in a statement. “Prayers for my family at this time is greatly appreciated, we are grieving at this time.”
