Littleton Police search landfill for missing woman

COMMERCE CITY - Multiple agencies started searching a local landfill Monday for evidence related to the disappearance of woman who was first reported missing this summer.

Littleton Police are looking for evidence related to the disappearance of 36-year-old Charlene Voight, who was reported missing by her family on July 8.

Her disappearance was considered suspicious after authorities found her abandoned car in a dirt lot.

The search is centered on the Tower Landfill at 8480 Tower Road in Commerce City, according to Littleton Police.

"It's unpleasant, but we feel like it's one of those things we have to do," Commander Trent Cooper said. "We're at a point in our investigation where you know we feel like we owe it to Charlene's family and the community to do everything we can to bring her home so her family has closure."

Officers and volunteers started sifting through pounds of garbage looking for Voight's belongings or even her remains. The search will continue for an undetermined length of time but could last a few weeks up to five months.

"We're in this for the long haul. This is not a sprint, this is a marathon and you know we could be out here for months so it's going to be a long-term, ongoing operation for us," said Cooper.

9Wants to Know obtained court records that show Voight feared for her life long before she ever went missing.

She and her boyfriend, Jeffrey Beier, had a tumultuous relationship, and she asked a California court for a restraining order in 2012 after he "grabbed, slapped, choked and dragged her around the house."

Beier was arrested on July 12 for sexual assault in what authorities called an unrelated case. Those charges were dropped in September. In court papers, prosecutors hinted the case was "intertwined" with Voight's disappearance.

Court filings say pursuing the sexual assault case would have meant turning over evidence related to the disappearance.

Police have never named Beier a suspect in Voight's disappearance and they wouldn't say Monday if they have a suspect or person of interest.
