Anita Miller - Managing Editor It shocked everyone in the close-knit Caldwell County community when a Central Texas Medical Center nurse and recently-divorced mother of two was found dead in her bed Dec. 27, 1993 and an autopsy revealed she had been shot in the head six times. Suspicion initially turned to a long-time friend who had been a guest in her home. Lee “Dub” Wackerhagen and his nine-year-old son Chance had spent the Christmas holidays with 38-year-old Latricia White. However, when their pickup — with blood inside — was found abandoned by Austin police days later the case took another twist. It's now believed that both Wackerhagen, who was a truck driver by trade, and his son were also the victims of foul play, and the Texas Rangers is featuring the “cold case” and asking for the public's input in finding the person or persons responsible. “Investigators found nothing in (White's) home appeared to be missing and believe this murder was most likely a crime of passion committed by someone closely associated to one or more of the victims,” DPS Trooper Robbie Barrera said. The Wackerhagens are now considered missing persons. Since Chance Wackerhagen was living in Kingsville at the time of his disappearance, Kingsville Crime Stoppers are offering a reward of up to $5,000. Tips can also be submitted through the Texas Rangers Cold Case website or the Missing Persons Clearinghouse at 800-346-3243. The Texas Rangers Unsolved Crimes Investigation Team was created “to assist Texas law enforcement agencies investigating unsolved murders or what appears to be serial or linked criminal transactions,” the agency said in a press release. “Since there is no statute of limitations for the offense of murder, investigators pursue these cases to a successful resolution; or until no other lead is viable.” |
