Friends and family of Matthew Pugh have been searching for the Washington County 25-year-old for at least eight hours a day since they learned he was missing more than two weeks ago on Sept. 27.

"It was like being punched in the stomach," said Tina House, Pugh's mother, of hearing the news that he'd gone missing. "It knocks the wind out of you. And then the panic sets in."

Pugh's aunt, Jolynne Simshaw, said they've had at least 10 people in the streets each day, searching for signs of Pugh or people who might have a clue as to where he went after leaving work the evening of Sept. 25.

They've fanned out from the mobile home park south of town where Washington County Sheriff's deputies found his empty 1994 Ford Taurus idling the next day. They've plastered flyers on telephone poles and in store windows, pleading for information that might lead them to Pugh.

"We want his face out there. We're wearing shirts with his face on them," Simshaw said.

Despite their efforts, she said, "There's nothing new."

"My son just vanished into thin air with no reason, no rhyme," said House, who came from California to search for Pugh. "You wake up and you wonder, 'Is my child cold? Is he hungry? Can I help him?" she said.

"It's like being lost, as lost as he is."

And while detectives are considering this case suspicious, Pugh's family said there's no explanation for his disappearance.

"He's had a rough patch in his life, but he grew up and grew out of his past," Simshaw said, referring to Pugh's history with drugs and theft. He's been recovering from addiction for about two years, Simshaw said, and he's embraced sobriety and religion in place of his old life.

Since getting clean, Pugh's followed a specific routine of going to work, going to a recovery support group and coming home to his sobriety house in Aloha, House said.

"Nothing in that routine ever changed until Friday, Sept. 25," she said. To her, there was never a sign that Pugh had gotten mixed up with the wrong people or fallen into old habits.

Sgt. Bob Ray with the Sheriff's Office said detectives are still looking for any and all information regarding this case, no matter how insignificant it may seem.

"A lot of people may discount information and think it's not important, but it might be," Ray said. "Let us be the filters."

Until some new information comes to light, Pugh's family plans to keep posting flyers, searching on foot and spreading the word on social media.

"You feel helpless, but not hopeless. The days get harder. But I'm his mom, and I won't ever give up," House said.

"He's out there somewhere."
