Police have exhumed the body of an unidentified young girl nearly fifty years after she was found stuffed into a weighted suitcase and thrown into Mississippi River.

Jane Doe West Alton, as she is referred to, was thought to have been just 2 or 3 years old when her body discovered by fishermen in Missouri on February 1, 1968.

Investigators at the time had ruled her death a homicide without revealing how she died, but were never able to identify the toddler, or track down her killer.

She was buried in an unmarked grave in Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Charles.

Now officers are hoping technological breakthroughs will finally be able to crack the decades-old cold case.

St. Charles County Police Department Detective Stephanie Fisk was finally given permission to exhume the body on Thursday after first coming across the case 13 years ago
