** This is near Lynns House Updated at 1:40 p.m. Lee County Sheriff’s investigators are looking into skeletal remains reported late yesterday afternoon in a remote area near the Salem community. The remains appear to be those of a human adult, Sheriff Jay Jones said Monday morning. What appears to be a human skull and other remains were located in a wooded area near a creek bed northeast of Lee Road 241 by the property owners, according to a LCSO release. People walking in the “very remote area” called law enforcement at about 4:16 p.m. Sunday to report the remains. The area is not accessible by vehicle, Jones said. Investigators also found articles of clothing near the remains, both of which were in “extremely deteriorated condition,” Jones said. “It’s nothing recent.” The remains have been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for testing, but investigators are on the scene off of Lee Road 241 with K-9 cadaver units seeking clues and additional evidence. Investigators were unsure Monday afternoon if the remains are male or female, and no cause or method of death has been determined. “We’re checking missing person reports over the past few years,” he added. “But nothing immediately jumped out.” The case is being investigated jointly by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the Lee County Coroner’s Office and the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call LCSO at 334-749-5651 |

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is still waiting to hear preliminary results from the state Department of Forensic Sciences on human skeletal remains found in a remote part of the Salem community Sunday. A human skull and other remains, along with clothing, were found late Sunday afternoon by property owners off of Lee Road 241 in a heavily wooded area. Both the remains and clothing were in “extremely deteriorated condition,” Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones said. LCSO investigators continued to search the area with K-9 cadaver units Monday. The Department of Forensic Sciences is in the process of investigating the remains, and Jones expects his office will receive basic physical characteristics, like gender, in the next several days. In the meantime, LCSO is continuing to look back into old missing persons cases. “We’ve received calls from agencies across with southeast with reports of missing persons,” Jones said, adding the case is generating interest outside of the state. LSCO officials have also entered detailed information, down to bone structure, into a national database – the National Crime Information Center. That information will remain in the database, and is accessible to law enforcement officials across the country |

Authorities in Lee County, Ala., have determined homicide caused the death of the man whose bones were found Sunday off Lee Road 241 in Salem. A forensic examination showed the man died from a gunshot wound, sheriff’s Capt. Van Jackson reported in a news release today. “The incomplete skeletal remains of what is believed to be an adult male, including a skull, jaw bone, ribs and other bone fragments were submitted to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences Medical Examiner’s Office in Montgomery for examination,” Jackson wrote. “The identity of the victim is unknown at this time and remains the primary focus of investigators working on this case.” He described the victim as “possibly a black or bi-racial male,” about 5-foot-10 to 6 feet tall and 24 to 40 years old. Anyone with information on the case is asked to the call the sheriff’s office at 334-749-5651. Read more here: http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/news/local/...l#storylink=cpy |

After human remains were discovered on Sunday in one man's backyard in Lee County, law enforcement is now ruling the death a homicide. The search for the victim's killer and the victim's identity are still a mystery to deputies in East Alabama but they are continuing to piece together what they have found near the remains. The landowner, Clinton Britton has lived on his 225 acres of land for 25 years in Salem, Alabama. Britton couldn't believe skeletal remains were found only a half mile from where his house sits. His neighbor was on his property deep in the woods taking pictures, when he stumbled upon the skeletal remains of what now is believed to be a black or biracial male between the ages of 25-40 years old. "My neighbor came up and he's the one that found it and he told me that it was back there so i said i need to see it... So we went back there and it was there so we called 911 and lee county took care of it after that." Britton explained to WLTZ. The Lee County Sheriff's department is now considering these male skeletal remains to be a victim of homicide after Montgomery forensic scientists found a gunshot wound. The body was found on Sunday evening, but in a very remote area on Britton's property. "Down by the creek kinda where people don't go even us that hunt, don't go through there much at all so it's kind of a secluded area." Britton said as he explained why he himself may never have come across the remains. The investigators tell us law enforcement agencies across the area are also checking their open missing person's cases to try and find any more leads and will continue to search Britton's property to search for more clues in this murder case |

Human Remains Identified On September 20, 2015 the Lee County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the discovery of what appeared to be human skull and skeletal remains near a creek bed in a remote area north of Lee Road 241 in the Salem community. Some articles of clothing in deteriorated condition were also located in close proximity to the scene. It was unknown exactly how long the remains had been in the area but it appeared that they had been on site for an extended period of time due to their condition at time of discovery. The discovery was made by the property owner who was in the process of walking the property at the time. Sheriff’s investigators secured the remains which were submitted to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for examination and ultimately to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Laboratory in Quantico, Virginia for additional testing. Examination, which included DNA testing by the respective laboratories, has resulted in the identification of the remains as being those of Jeffery Michael Sharritt (35) of Phenix City, Al. His death has been ruled a homicide. The investigation remains on-going and anyone having any information regarding this case is urged to contact the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at 334.749.5651 or the Lee County Crime Stoppers at 1.888.522.7847. |
