Virginia Tech has identified the student who went overboard a Carnival cruise ship Sunday morning.

The student has been identified as Cameron Smook. He was from Glen Allen, Virginia.

Smook, 21, was a mining and minerals engineering major at Virginia Tech. He was scheduled to graduate in the spring.
“Our family sincerely appreciates your continued prayers and support at this most difficult time,” the Smook family said in a statement.

According to a statement from the family, Smook and several of his friends left Miami on Saturday aboard the Carnival Glory for a Carribean cruise.

The family was notified Sunday that Cameron accidentally fell overboard during the night and was missing at sea.

The U.S. Coast Guard was notified and began a search and rescue operation. The search was suspended Tuesday evening.

“We thank the Coast Guard for their outstanding service and for keeping us informed throughout this ordeal,” the family statement said.

Smook graduated from Deep Run High School in Glen Allen. He recently accepted a job.

"The entire Virginia Tech community extends our deepest condolences and sympathies to Cameron's family and friends at this moment of tragedy and grief," Virginia Tech President Timothy Sands said in a statement. "My heart also goes out to our students and faculty who also feel tremendous sorrow at this loss. I know this is a strong and supportive community, and encourage us all to turn to one another for support and solace."

Memorial service information will be shared at a later date.

The United States Coast Guard has called off a search for a Virginia Tech student who went overboard a cruise ship.

Video cameras confirm the 21-year-old went overboard the cruise ship Carnival Glory Sunday morning five miles southwest of Abaco Island, Bahamas. The ship was on its first leg of a seven-day Caribbean cruise that left Miami Saturday.

The student has not been found.

The Coast Guard and other authorities were notified after the man was reported missing. Carnival Glory returned to the location where the man went missing and participated in a search. Carnival re-directed cruise ship Carnival Ecstasy to assist in the search as well.

Both ships have been released from the search. Ecstasy returned to Miami on Monday as scheduled and is currently on a four-day voyage according to Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen. Carnival Glory missed its stop in Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas and is back on its scheduled itinerary.

The Coast Guard ended the search at sunset on Tuesday. The Coast Guard searched more than 4,600 square nautical miles with two aircraft and a ship according to United States Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Jon-Paul Rios of the Coast Guard 7th District based in Miami.

One MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter squad was launched from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater and one HC-144 search and rescue plane was launched from Coast Guard Air Station Miami. Coast Guard Cutter Bernard C. Webber also assisted in the search.

Carnival Glory's home port is Miami.

Smook and several friends left Miami on Saturday aboard the Carnival Glory for a Caribbean cruise.

The family was notified Sunday that Cameron accidentally fell overboard during the night and was missing at sea. Cruise ship Glory turned around only after Smook was reported missing an unspecified amount of time after he physically went overboard.

The U.S. Coast Guard was notified and began a search and rescue operation. The search was suspended Tuesday evening. The Coast Guard Cutter Bernard C. Webber and two aircraft searched more than 4,700 square miles over three days.

“We thank the Coast Guard for their outstanding service and for keeping us informed throughout this ordeal,” the family statement said.

Cruise Ship Glory is equipped with cameras according to Carnival, although Federal law mandates more advanced systems. A cruise expert says the law is loose and many companies employ lobbyists to help get around this regulation, and systems can help save lives in cases like this.

"There's no question that the man overboard systems would make it more likely to successfully rescue and save a life,” maritime lawyer Jim Walker said. “There's no guarantees of course, but if you don't see someone going overboard in the middle of the night if the crew doesn't see it and other passengers don't alert the crew, the ship will continue to sail away."

According to Walker, provisions of the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010, signed into law by President Obama on July 27, 2010, mandate a system that immediately notifies the bridge and the crew that someone has gone overboard.

"A camera without infrared technology, radars and motion detection systems and alarms are not remotely automatic man overboard systems," Walker said. WDBJ7 asked Carnival if cruise ship Glory was equipped with an advanced type of automatic man overboard system. Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen told us Glory has "a man overboard/security cameras."

Walker said most cruise ships have video for surveillance purposes, although most cruise lines do not have real time monitoring of the cameras outside of casino cameras.

"There's no question that if a system existed it would have detected this man going overboard," Walker said. "It would have alerted the bridge, the bridge could instantaneously send a rescue ship to the scene, the ship could turn around, and the chances are substantially higher that you could have a successful end to the story."

In a statement, Carnival Cruise Lines said these type of situations are very rare. Carnival operates 24 ships and 1,500 voyages a year. Annually, Carnival Cruise Lines carries 4.5 million passengers a year.
