HALLOCK, Minn. -- It has been more than 11 months since anyone has seen or heard from Dawn Joy Carlson, a Lake Bronson woman who disappeared Oct. 2, 2013.

Carlson, who was 43 at the time of her disappearance and suffered from what family members say were late-term effects of Lyme disease, was last observed in Karlstad.

Last week, family members started a Facebook page, "Find Dawn Carlson," to spread the word in their continuing efforts to find her.

"Now that hunting season is approaching, we ask that hunters please report if any abandoned cars are seen or anything else that would help locate Dawn," said her cousin, Lynette (Grahn) Taylor, who lives in Deerwood.

Although several air and ground searches were conducted last fall, authorities and family members found no sign of Carlson or her vehicle, a black 2001 Mercury Sable four-door sedan with a dent on the passenger-side door.

"She has not made contact with family, has not used her cellphone, medical card, or even tried to access her bank accounts since she was last seen. No one has any clue as to what happened to her," Taylor said.

Carlson is listed on the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System database. The investigation has been ongoing by the Kittson County Sheriff's Department and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Although her mailing address is Lake Bronson, Carlson's residence is closer to Hallock, according to her sister, DeAnn Carlson.

Dawn Carlson is believed to have contracted Lyme disease after being bitten by a deer tick while working at a golf course sometime in the mid-1990s, according to family members.

"She was misdiagnosed at that time," DeAnn Carlson said. "When they finally found out what she had, a simple antibiotic wouldn't take care of it."

According to the Lyme Disease Association, untreated Lyme disease can result in neurological disorders, crippling arthritis, blindness, deafness, psychiatric or psychological disorders, or death.

"I think it was affecting her thought process, because of the late stages," her sister said. "It's like having a mental illness. The thing is, I have a hard time believing that she might have just left the area on her own."

Before the disability developed, Taylor said Carlson held two jobs, one of which was providing private golf lessons, and she helped to care for Taylor's two children.

"She was my nanny and stayed in my house, so I could work," Taylor said. "She was really good with them."

Taylor said they had information last fall that her cousin might have been on her way to Badger on the day of her disappearance.

The sheriff's office also investigated a lead that indicated she may have been traveling to the Brainerd area.

Those leads led nowhere.

When she disappeared, Carlson was described as 5-foot-6 and weighing about 220 pounds, with sandy-colored hair and green eyes. She was last seen wearing a black jacket, a sweatshirt and blue jeans.

Taylor said she is considering hiring a private investigator.

"I'm on a quest to find my cousin," she said. "We're not going to give up."

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Kittson County Sheriff's Department at 218-843-3535.

Minnesota woman missing since 2013 found at bottom of river near Lake Bronson
By Andrew Hazzard on May 26, 2017 at 8:28 p.m.

HALLOCK, Minn.-- A sheriff in northwest Minnesota believes his department has found the body of a Lake Bronson woman missing since 2013 after discovering her car with a cadaver inside in a small river connected to a lake investigators had already searched twice.

Dawn Carlson was last seen Oct. 2, 2013, and was declared a missing person the next day.

Kittson County Sheriff Steve Porter believes his department put the case to rest Thursday. Porter and Chief Deputy Matt Vig decided to search through a river inlet on the south side of Lake Bronson near Kittson County Road 10 at about 2 p.m. Thursday. Using a depth finder, the men found "either a great big rock or a car", Porter said.

When they prodded the object, oil rose to the surface. Vig jumped in. About 13 feet below him, he found a car, Porter said.

Inside the 2001 Mercury Sable, investigators found a body and a purse with Carlson's ID.

The department is sending the body to a medical examiner for an autopsy and identification, but Porter is confident it's Carlson.

Carlson disappeared shortly after telling friends and authorities she wanted to move away, possibly to Brainerd, Minn., in hopes of a fresh start. She was last heard from via a message left on a friend's message machine in Crosby, Minn., on Oct. 4, 2013. A review of her bank records showed no account activity after Oct. 2, 2013. She also left behind her dogs and personal belongings, according to Herald archives.

It is unclear how long her body has been under the water, or what caused her vehicle to careen off the road.

"We do not suspect any foul play," Porter said.

The sheriff said after three full years of searching through Kittson County, and three falls of deer hunters canvassing the woods, no one had found Carlson or her vehicle. That's when he went to the Kittson County Board of Commissioners and asked for a depth finder, and the department began searching every body of water in the area.

'We believed we were going to find her," Porter said.

The department had twice searched Lake Bronson but had not checked the shallow inlet on the lake's south side before Thursday.

The sheriff hopes the discovery can bring closure to Carlson's family.

"We wanted to do everything we could to bring this case to a close," Porter told the Herald.
