ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI -- Part of a human jaw bone was discovered by a jogger along the Lake Michigan shoreline and police hope dental records can help them identify the remains.

State police Detective Sgt. Matt Doan said the lower part of a jaw bone was discovered Aug. 1 along the beach in Ganges Township, not far from 121st Avenue.

The area is just south of West Side County Park.

The bone was deteriorated and weathered. It appeared to have been exposed to the elements for some time and apparently had been in the water.

The bone had three teeth attached and two had fillings.

Doan said the bone will be tested at Sparrow Hospital in the Lansing area as well as the state police crime lab. Results will be submitted to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs), a database run by the U.S. Department of Justice, for a possible match.

Only after the last tree has been
cut down;
Only after the last fish has been
caught;
Only after the last river has been
poisoned;
Only then will you realize
that money cannot be eaten.
