Father, son find human skeletal remains in Sac River
Remains to be matched against missing-person reports
UPDATED 1:32 PM PDT Jun 24, 2014
By Sarah Heise

GLENN COUNTY, Calif. (KCRA) —A State Fish and Wildlife warden and his son were kayaking on the Sacramento River near Hamilton City when they found what appeared to be human skeletal remains, officials said Tuesday.

Warden Steve Martignoni's son found the bones on the west bank of the river in water that was only about 10 inches deep, according to the Glenn County Sheriff's Department.

The pair decided to take a break from paddling when Martignoni's son noticed something in the shallow water.

Once the father-son duo determined it was skeletal remains, they continued to search along the banks of the river while waiting for deputies to arrive, but found nothing else.

Officers arrived and collected the remains for examination.

According to officials, the remains are those of a lower body extremity, and indicators show that they are not Native American artifacts, which are often found near the river.

The pieces of bone will be examined to try to figure out whether the remains are of a man or woman, adult or juvenile, and possibly an approximate age and race, deputies said.

The information that is gathered will be matched to descriptions of missing person reports.

It is too early to determine possible cause of death or how long the remains were in the river.

Investigators said the area that the bones were found will be thoroughly searched and processed.

Anyone who may have information about this case is asked to call the Glenn County Sheriff's Department at 530-934-6441.

WILLOWS >> The skeletal remains found near the shore of the Sacramento River are a tibia and fibula of a right leg that is still attached to a booted foot, and investigators are hoping the boot can reveal some information, according to the Glenn County Sheriff's Office.

The skeletal remains were found June 21 in about 10 inches of clear water by the son of off-duty Fish and Wildlife Warden Steve Martignoni. Martignoni was kayaking with his son on the river, south of Hamilton City, when his son decided to take a break and came across the remains.

Investigators do not yet know how long the remains were in the water, where they came from, or a cause of death.

Glenn County is attempting to track down the location the boot, a Brahma brand men's size 9 1/2, was purchased, according to a press release from the Sheriff's Office. The label inside the boot has "Alpha," "ASTMF2413-05" and "2590418" stamped on its tongue, and detectives and the boot's manufacturer is attempting to trace the numbers.

Chico State University's Human Identification Laboratory has possession of the remains to attempt to gather more information, including to try to determine if the bones belong to an adult or juvenile, and to get an approximate age and race.

DNA samples will also be extracted from the remains and run against databases.

The Glenn County Sheriff's Office has contacted the Shasta and Tehama sheriff's offices to have the remains checked against missing persons cases and remains found "in those upstream counties," but there have been no matches, according to the Glenn County Sheriff's Office. All law enforcement agencies have also been notified.

Anyone with any information regarding this case is asked to contact Detective Kelly Knight at 934-6721 or 934-6431.

The last time human remains were found in Glenn County along the Sacramento River where near Ord Bend Park on July 2012. The remains were identified by DNA verification on October 2012 as those of Heidi Joanne Ring. Ring was reported missing in 2005. Her case is ongoing.
