NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans police removed the body of a man Sunday from the Mississippi River near the Governor Nicholls Street Wharf.

Port officials received a call at about 3:50 p.m. of a body in the river near the Erato Street terminal.

Police were able to remove the body from the water by 4:30 p.m.

The body was discovered in a busy stretch along the river. Witnesses on the scene said they were able to see the body from their hotel rooms.

Police have not identified the body.

The official cause of death won't be released until an autopsy is conducted.

Harbor Police are investigating the body of a man found Sunday afternoon (June 15) in the Mississippi River near the Gov. Nicholls Street Wharf.

Police received a call of a body in the river at 3:51 p.m., said Matthew Gresham, a Harbor Police spokesman. At least 10 spectators looked on from the river's edge while police worked to pull the body from the water.

By 5 p.m., the body had been wrapped and removed, Gresham said.

The body apparently had been in the water for "some time," Gresham said. He declined to speculate on the man's age but said it's possible the body is that of a man who jumped from the Crescent City Connection on May 29.

John Gagliano, chief investigator for the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office, said the body has not yet been identified and an autopsy will not be conducted until Monday (June 16).
