ALCOLU - Partial human skeletal remains found by hunters during the weekend in a Clarendon County forested area had law enforcement returning to the scene Monday morning, hoping to discover more clues into the identity and cause of death of the apparently long-missing person.

Investigators first responded to the wooded area about 75 feet from Tearcoat Road in Alcolu on Sunday after two snake hunters first located the human remains.

Skeletal remains found during the weekend in Clarendon County will need to be identified by DNA testing, Clarendon County Coroner Hayes Samuels said Tuesday.

The remains were discovered by snake hunters near Tearcoat Road in Alcolu on Sunday, and investigators from the Clarendon County Sheriff's Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division began recovery of the remains Monday with the aid of a canine trained to detect cadavers.

Authorities awaiting DNA results

Skeletal remains found in woods still unidentified

More information about the skeletal remains discovered June 8 in Clarendon County may be weeks away, said Maj. Kipp Coker of the Clarendon County Sheriff's Office.

The remains were found by snake hunters near Tearcoat Road in Alcolu. Investigators from the sheriff's office, along with officers from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, recovered the remains with the aid of a canine trained to detect cadavers. SLED investigators examined the site with a metal detector, Coker said, but no jewelry or other items which could provide clues to the identity of the bones were located.
