Partial human remains were discovered in a ditch south of Ottawa on Thursday night, Ontario Provincial Police say.

Two people walking along Steen Road near Thompson Road, north of Winchester, Ont., found the remains and called police at about 8:20 p.m ET.

Investigators weren't able to determine the cause of death, age, gender or identity of the victim.

The remains have been sent to the chief coroner's office in Oshawa, where an autopsy will be conducted on Tuesday.

OPP Sgt. Kristine Rae said the remains appear to have been in the ditch "for some time," but she could not elaborate.

Anyone with information is asked to call Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry OPP at 613-534-2223 or 1-888-310-1122.
