POTSDAM — State police investigators have found human remains buried behind a mobile home at 733 May Road. St. Lawrence County Coroner James M. Sienkiewycz said the remains were in a box lined with concrete. Investigators pulled the box from the ground this morning. It is too early to tell whether the body found was that of Betty and Alvin Babcock, the couple in their 80s believed to be have been buried there. Mr. Sienkiewycz said the body was wrapped in some kind of material, and it was “premature” to determine whether the remains were male or female. He said the remains will be taken to a local morgue, and arrangements will be made for an autopsy to help determine the cause of death. The search for the Babcocks is a result of what started out as a welfare fraud investigation, St. Lawrence County District Attorney Mary E. Rain said Thursday. The probe led authorities to the May Road trailer occupied by Robert Bartlett, who, according to relatives of Mrs. Babcock, used to drive the couple to doctor appointments. Relatives of Betty Babcock said Wednesday they had not heard from her in about two years. Mr. Sienkiewycz was called to the dig site this morning. He was joined by Ms. Rain, members of her staff and John H. Donohue, state police Violent Crime Investigation Team senior investigator. State police began digging at 733 May Road Thursday morning. The box brought to light this morning is one of two believed to be on the property. The ground is being thawed to help investigators unearth the second. http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/article...EWS09/703229993 |

Ell Only after the last tree has been cut down; Only after the last fish has been caught; Only after the last river has been poisoned; Only then will you realize that money cannot be eaten. | |
