GREENSBORO − Larry Williams and Ambrosina Gaston were at their apartment off Fairfax Road Tuesday afternoon when their 13-year-old daughter came home and said she found human remains in the woods.

"She said she found a human skull," Williams said of his 13-year-old daughter, Ambrosia. "I didn't believe her and told her to bring it to me. She did and I could tell by the teeth and the size of the skull, the shape of it, that it was. I could tell immediately."

When Williams saw the skull he called police. Ambrosia showed police where the remains were located in the woods. They were in a thinly wooded area in the 1500 block of Fairfax Road, behind a house and the apartment complex.

The couple said their 13-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son went into the woods behind their Colony Pointe apartment complex to explore near the creek. They ran into some thorns, and walked a different way. When they did they found the skeletal remains, Williams said.

The family has only lived at the apartment complex for a few months. Williams said he used to take his daughter for hikes in Virginia, where they discovered frogs and crawfish.

"This time I told her to explore on her own," Williams said. "Instead of frogs she finds a human being."

He credits his daughter with being braver than he would be.

"Being 33 years old, I probably would have walked off," Williams said. "She took a lot of responsibility. That was somebody's loved one. I'm proud of her for being aware. Somebody's spirit can get some rest now, and she's pretty happy about that."

Police have their work cut out for them. Capt. Mike Richey said there were no clothing or personal items with the remains to help investigators identify the person.

Investigators are still recovering evidence and remains.

"We're still in the recovery process," Richey said. "We can't determine what is there and what isn't. We won't know if all the bones are there until the end of that process."

Police, who have been at Fairfax Road since about 3 p.m. Tuesday, hope to finish collecting evidence and examining the area by this afternoon. The remains do not appear to have been buried. Investigators are uncertain if the body shows any signs of trauma, Richey said.

The remains are that of an adult, but had little other information about who the person is, including the gender, Richey said.

"There is nothing that helps us identify them," he said.

When investigators are finished collecting evidence, they will send the remains to the N.C. Medical Examiner's Office, where an official will determine the age, sex and hopefully identify the person, as well, Richey said. The same person will also identify which bones are present and which are missing.

Richey was uncertain how long that process would take.

GREENSBORO — No clothes or identification was found on the skeletal remains, making it difficult to identify the person, according to police.

Capt. Mike Richey said only bones were found in the wooded area in the 1500 block of Fairfax Road.

"There is nothing to help us identify it," he said.

Richey also said it's too soon to know if the body experienced any trauma. He said police will likely work at the scene all day.

Larry Williams said his children, a 13-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son, found the remains Tuesday when they were playing in the woods. They told him and he called police, Williams said.

Check back for updates.
