BY THEO DOUGLAS Californian staff writer tdouglas@bakersfield.com A field worker checking sprinkler lines in orange groves near McFarland found partially-buried human remains Saturday morning, a Kern County Sheriff's Office representative said. The grisly discovery happened around 10 a.m. on unincorporated county land southeast of Sherwood Avenue and Wallace Road. That's about four miles east of McFarland. Sheriff's homicide detectives arrived around 11:30 a.m. and began canvassing among orange trees on the east side of Wallace Road, according to Kern County Sheriff's Sgt. Avery Simpson. "Homicide detectives have been called out and are in the process of unearthing those remains and collecting evidence," Simpson said during a mid-day interview as deputies measured the distance from the road to the crime scene. "At this point we don't know whether it's male, female, age, anything." Simpson said the Sheriff's office will await an autopsy next week by the Kern County Coroner, to determine the manner and cause of the victim's death and how long the remains were buried. Simpson said detectives were working the case "as a homicide," but a later press release described it as a "death investigation." The investigation, about 30 miles north of Bakersfield, shut down a short section of Wallace Road south of Sherwood Avenue for nearly two hours Saturday, delaying Paramount Farms crews who were ready to spray a nutritional supplement on orange groves on the west side of Wallace Road. "I called my boss and told him there's something going on," said Efrain Gonzalez, a Paramount Farms lead man who talked to Sheriff's deputies Saturday. "I guess I'm going to tell him to start (spraying) on Monday." Anyone with information on the incident should call sheriff's office, 861-3110, or the Secret Witness line, 322-4040. http://www.bakersfieldcalifornian.com/loca..._medium=synapse |

Ell Only after the last tree has been cut down; Only after the last fish has been caught; Only after the last river has been poisoned; Only then will you realize that money cannot be eaten. | |
