Savannah-Chatham police Monday afternoon launched a homicide investigation after human bones were discovered in a wooded area in the city’s Cloverdale Neighborhood. A Georgia Department of Transportation employee inspecting the property just off the southern portion of Cynthia Street near Bel Air Drive found a human bone just before 2 p.m., said Julian Miller, police spokesman. Investigating officers found additional bones in the area after they were called to the area about a block from Butler Elementary School near Interstate 16 and Stiles Avenue. The bones, Miller said, appeared to have been in the area a long time. That could complicate the process in identifying who they belonged to. Monday evening police sent the remains to the Georgia Crime Lab for analysis. Miller said it would likely take a significant amount of time before they could be identified or police could determine the cause of death. Savannah-Chatham police always open an investigation like Monday’s initially as a homicide, Miller said, until that could be ruled out. No other information was immediately available late Monday. http://savannahnow.com/news/2014-01-13/sav...es#.UtUp5sKA2M8 |
