MARION COUNTY, MO. -- Missouri law enforcement continue to search for the identity of the body found in the Mississippi River Sunday near Hannibal.

A boater just south of Sawyer's Creek, discovered the body in the water around 2 p.m. Sunday.

Marion County Sheriff Jimmy Shinn confirmed that the body is female, but had few other details Monday.

Sheriff Jimmy Shinn says an autopsy was performed this afternoon in Columbia, Mo.

Shinn speculated the body had been in the water for a few days, but could not confirm the cause of death.

"Anytime you have a body in the river, it's a suspicious death, and we want to find and fit all the pieces of the puzzle together and find out exactly what happened. Was this a homicide, a suicide or was this just an accident? At this point in time, it's just too early to tell what type of death this is," Shinn said.

Shinn said several agencies in Iowa have contacted him regarding missing persons, but he won't be able to make any connection without the full autopsy report and more research.

This investigation comes about two weeks after search and rescue crews reported to the river just north of Hannibal where a man claimed to have seen a body in the water. But their search came up empty.

The water patrol with the Missouri State Highway Patrol is assisting in the investigation efforts.

September 20, 2013 10:54 am • Associated Press

HANNIBAL, Mo. • Authorities in the Hannibal area continue to seek the identity of a young woman whose body was found in the Mississippi River south of the northeast Missouri town.

The Hannibal Courier-Post (http://bit.ly/19kvzXX ) reports that Marion County Sheriff Jimmy Shinn is asking for the public's help in identifying the victim, whose body was discovered Sunday along the Missouri shore.

Shin says the victim was apparently 15 to 30 years of age, 5-foot-3 and weighing about 135 pounds with shoulder-length black hair.

Still no ID of body found in river 2 months ago near Hannibal
Associated Press 9:10 a.m. EST November 21, 2013

HANNIBAL, Mo. (AP) - More than two months after a woman's body was found along the banks of the Mississippi River near the northeast Missouri town of Hannibal, her identity remains a mystery.

Marion County Sheriff Jimmy Shinn told the Hannibal Courier-Post that police are no closer to identifying the woman than they were when the body was found in September.

Shinn believes the woman was not from the Hannibal area. He says one possibility is that she was in the country illegally.

There was some evidence that she toured the Mark Twain Cave two days before the body was found. The cave is south of Hannibal, not far from where the body was discovered.
