Skeletal remains found in Central Valley woods

CENTRAL VALLEY – Woodbury Town Police are investigating the discovery of human skeletal remains found on Turner Road in Central Valley.

Police said two young men were walking through the woods on Friday when they discovered a skull and other skeletal remains. They contacted the police and a search of the woods was conducted. Officers confirmed the remains were human and set up a crime scene.

The State Police Forensic Identification Unit and the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene.

Authorities said it appears the remains have been at the location for a long period of time, possibly over a year.

The age and sex of the remains, as well as the cause of death are unknown.

The investigation is continuing.

WOODBURY - Police are hoping dental records and personal items will help them identify human remains found in Woodbury last week.

The remains, found by two men near the Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, are believed to be female. Investigators say they found female clothing, a purse and jewelry near the remains last Friday.

On Saturday, authorities found more bones believed to be from the same woman not far from where the first set of remains were found. Police say the remains and belongings match those of a woman who is 25 to 30 years old.

Officials believe the body was dumped in the woods near the Woodbury Commons Outlets about a year ago. So far, investigators say the remains do not match the description of any local missing persons, including missing Edgemont native Lauren Spierer.

Investigators are searching for matching missing persons from both international and national databases.

Woodbury police say they'll know more information after a scheduled autopsy on Tuesday. After police receive the results, they say they will release photographs of the personal items found with the remains in hope that someone will recognize the items.

WOODBURY - Police suspect that the human remains found at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets got there as a result of foul play.

Preliminary autopsy results show the remains are of an Asian woman who is at least 50 years old and about 4 feet 11 inches. Authorities believe the body may have been left for dead as many as five years ago.

Police say eight women who have been reported missing from different states match the description. All of the women have been missing for at least two years.

Authorities have released pictures of personal items found at the scene in the hope that someone will recognize them. They say an opal necklace and matching ring, a watch and glasses were found near the skull and skeleton that were discovered in the woods behind the outlet mall.

WOODBURY — Police have released photos of jewelry and glasses found near skeletal remains in a woods near Woodbury Common Premium Outlets in hopes of identifying what they now believe to be an Asian woman whose body was there for two to five years.

A forensic anthropologist at New York City's Office of Chief Medical Examiner made those determinations after studying the bones, which were reported to authorities two weeks ago after a Woodbury Common employee discovered them. Police say the woman may have been at least 50 years old and between 4 feet 5 inches and 5 feet 2 inches in height.

Town police, who say foul play is suspected and are collaborating with the state police Major Crimes Unit, have dental records and the belongings found at the scene — a watch, a ring, a necklace and glasses — to help with identifying the body.

Anyone with information may call Detective Michael Bauer at 928-2341 or a confidential tip line at 928-2344.
