The quest to identify human remains found scattered among rough terrain in Scurry County progressed Thursday when the remains were sent to a Texas forensic center, an FBI spokeswoman reported.

Katherine Chaumont, public affairs specialist with the FBI’s Dallas division, did not specify to which forensic center the remains were sent.

The badly decomposed remains were discovered Saturday in a remote area near Snyder. Local, state and federal authorities gathered evidence over several days before the search was called off Tuesday evening.

The discovery of remains, however, does not ensure identification.

To make an identification, law enforcement officials must match remains to a missing person. Two forensics experts who spoke to the Reporter-News on Wednesday detailed several ways an identification could be made: dental records, implants, fingerprints and DNA.

In April 2012, a badly decomposed body was found in Big Spring. Other than gender — male — the body has yet to be identified, said Big Spring Police Chief Lonnie Smith.

“It didn’t match any people that we had a record on,” Smith said.

There was speculation at the time that the body may have been that of Hailey Dunn, who was reported missing from her Colorado City home Dec. 28, 2010. She was 13 at the time.

The FBI also was called in on that case, Smith said, but left after determining the body was not that of the teenager.

Big Spring police attempted to analyze soil found on the body to determine where it may have come from, but had no luck.

Smith said the body may have come from a nearby cemetery or may even have been buried during the era when people buried their relatives on their own properties.
