Slow progress identifying human remains found in October

Solving a murder mystery without an eye witness usually depends on first identifying the victim. When a Humboldt County family discovered skeletal remains along the Eel River near Piercy in October, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office called forensic scientists at Chico State University for help. And while the results provided by anthropologists at Chico have narrowed the possibilities, the journey to learn who died and how seems nearly as far away as before.

A man between the ages of 25 and 45 with a height between 5 feet 11 inches and 6 feet 5 inches was buried in a shallow grave along the Eel River near Piercy, according to the anthropologists who examined the remains. Detectives believe the man was the victim of a homicide, but no cause of death has been identified.

The remains were found in a shallow grave along a small shelf by the Eel River near the 83000 block of Highway 271 on October 30.

The unidentified Humboldt County family that discovered the grave has kayaked on the Eel River in the area for years. A few years ago, they spotted the tip of a white men's athletic shoe poking out of the ground a few yards above the normal river level. For years they believed it was debris washed up on the river's shore.

At the end of October, during a kayaking and mushroom hunting excursion, they noticed the tip of a second shoe poking up suspiciously next to the first one.

The father investigated what turned out to be the shallow gravesite, tugging at one of the shoes until a foot came away with it. The horrified family called the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office, which investigated the next day.

Deputies at first wondered whether this was some kind of Halloween prank, but an examination of the gravesite proved the area warranted serious investigation.

No identification was found in the grave.

The current broad span of age and height added to the unknown amount of time the remains were buried and makes identifying the remains extremely challenging.

To help refine the man's identity, detectives have asked the California Department of Justice to extract DNA from the remains. Detectives hope this can help them learn the man's identity, allow them to bring closure to his family, and bring his killer to justice.

Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to contact the Sheriff's Office Tip-Line by calling 707-234-2100.

Only after the last tree has been

Only then will you realize
