ST. MARTIN — Jackson County Coroner Vicki Broadus is seeking the identity of a female body discovered Thursday, south of LeMoyne Boulevard off Ascott Street. Recovery of the body brings Mississippi’s death toll from Hurricane Katrina to 219. Katrina made landfall in St. Martin on Aug. 29, packing 145-mph winds and a 25- to 30-foot storm surge. The unidentified black woman was about 5 foot 3 inches tall and weighed approximately 100 pounds. Broadus said the woman was wearing a black T-shirt with University of Michigan Ann Arbor emblazoned on front, black capri pants, size 15, and had pierced ears. The woman is believed to be the 12th Katrina victim found in Jackson County. “We have no idea if she lived there or came because of rising water,” Broadus said. “I am sure she died from head and chest injuries from immersion in water.” . The coroner’s office is also seeking information on a John Doe. John Doe, a black male, was found in a marshy area off Gulf Park Estates. |
