Authorities try to ID Mississippi River body

Posted: May 26, 2012 10:08 AM CDT Updated: May 26, 2012 10:11 AM CDT

SAUGET, Ill. (AP) - Investigators in southwestern Illinois are trying to identify the decomposed body of a man found in the Mississippi River.

The Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/KSFKum) reports the body had been in the water for about a week when a crane operator found it Friday morning floating in a logjam near a barge near the village of Sauget (SAW'-zhay).

Deputy St. Clair County coroner Dan Haskenkenhoff says an autopsy didn't reveal any cause of death or signs of injury or foul play.

Haskenhoff says he's unaware of any missing person reports perhaps connected to the man. Haskenhoff's search for leads has him calling St. Louis-area authorities.

Police describe the man as being dark-haired and about 25 to 30 years old, about 6 feet to 6 feet 4 inches tall and about 180 pounds

Only after the last tree has been
cut down;
Only after the last fish has been
caught;
Only after the last river has been
poisoned;
Only then will you realize
that money cannot be eaten.
