New details emerge regarding dead body by Tom Joyce Staff Reporter CANA, Va. — Law enforcement officials were combing through missing-person files Monday in an attempt to identify a body found the day before along a Cana roadside. Carroll Sheriff J.B. Gardner confirmed Monday that the discovery involved skeletal remains of a person believed to have been dead “less than five years.” Despite the deteriorated condition of the body, officials also have tentatively identified the gender of the person. “They were leaning yesterday toward it being a male,” Gardner added Monday. The individual is believed to have been between 25 and 35 years old at the time of death. Despite those new details emerging, many more questions remain surrounding the body that was located on Timber Road, which connects Bear Trail and Wards Gap Road in a remote section of southern Carroll County. It was found shortly before noon by a man picking up trash, who has not been identified. One concerns the identity of the person, and the circumstances behind the death. On Monday, investigators were exploring missing persons reports fitting the time frame pinpointed — not only from Carroll County, but neighboring jurisdictions. “I know Surry County has a couple and Alleghany has a couple,” the Carroll sheriff said of possibilities in North Carolina counties. As for the cause of death, especially regarding the possibility of foul play, it is hoped that forensic analysis of the remains will provide some answers. “We have packed them all up and taken them to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke — and we hope they will be able to tell us something, because anything is better than what we know,” Gardner said. After the body was found, investigators from surrounding North Carolina assisted Carroll County officers Sunday in searching the site on Timber Road area and collecting evidence. Personnel from the Virginia State Police also responded to the scene. http://www.mtairynews.com/view/full_story/...nstance=popular Read more: Mount Airy News - New details emerge regarding dead body |

http://www.mtairynews.com/view/full_story/...ispanic-male---? Remains found in Cana believed to be Hispanic male by By Allen Worrell CANA, Va. — The identity of human skeletal remains discovered in Cana on April 1 are still unknown, but officials with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department now believe the remains are of an Hispanic male. On April 1, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office got a call to respond to Timber Road in Cana, where a man picking up trash had discovered skeletal remains while clearing the wood line on a piece of property. In addition to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, the State Forensic Team, an anthropologist from Radford and the Medical Examiner’s office were among those on the scene or expected to arrive shortly. The remains were then taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for further investigation. Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Donnie Spangler spoke with the Medical Examiner’s office Thursday and was advised the remains appear to be of a Hispanic male between the ages of 30-35, approximately 5 feet, 7 inches tall and dead more than a year. “We have no missing person from here by that description,” Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner said. “We are still working with several agencies in North Carolina who have missing persons matching that description.” Gardner said the body has also been sent to another lab to withdraw DNA. http://www.galaxgazette.com/content/bones-remain-mystery-0 Bones remain a mystery Research has provided some clues about human remains found in Carroll County. By Christopher Brooke, Reporter Monday, May 7, 2012 at 6:00 am (Updated: May 7, 6:00 am) HILLSVILLE — Remains found on Timber Road in Cana April 1 are going to a forensic lab in Tidewater to extract DNA to try to identify the subject, Carroll Sheriff J.B. Gardner reports. The medical examiners from the state lab in Roanoke believe that the bones and other materials recovered from searches at the scene belong to an individual with Hispanic or white male traits, Gardner told The Gazette. Medical examiners told Carroll Investigator Donnie Spangler that they believe the “John Doe” was in his mid-30s to mid-40s; stood 5-feet, 7-inches tall and had been dead for more than a year. “We have no missing person from here by that description,” Gardner said. “We are still working with several agencies in North Carolina who have missing persons matching that description.” Further information about the subject could come from DNA testing, probably extracted from a tooth, Gardner said. The resulting DNA profile will be entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System database in an attempt to find a match. The lab has also sent out pictures of the remnants of clothing that were found on the scene, the sheriff said. Clothing that survives can help narrow down the identity, he explained. If a certain name brand of shoe was found with a body, for example, loved ones who knew the subject could tell investigators if those items were consistent with the kinds of shoes their family member would wear. Or, loved ones could rule out an individual based on items they know the person would not wear. The same goes for belts, jeans and other items of clothes, Gardner said. Investigators anticipate that the DNA testing results could take months to complete. |

http://www.thecarrollnews.com/view/full_st...s-found-in-Cana Facial reconstruction models to be released for remains found in Cana by Allen Worrell Editor 19 hrs ago The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office hopes facial reconstruction models and photographs will help solve the identity of the remains of the body found in Cana last year. On April 1, 2012, human skeletal remains were discovered in Cana after the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office got a call to respond to Timber Road, where a man picking up trash discovered the remains while clearing a wood line on a piece of property. The remains were taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for further investigation. Since that time, the only leads have been that the remains seem to be from a Hispanic male, possibly between the ages of 30-35, and approximately 5-7 tall. On January 16, the Chief Medical Examiner for the Western District of Virginia in Roanoke will unveil models and photographs showing the approximate appearance of four individuals found deceased in Western Virginia, but who have not been identified, including the body found in Cana last year. The facial models represent the skeletal remains of men found in separate areas of Western Virginia between 1986 and 2012. Aside from Carroll, similar facial reconstruction models and photographs will be available for skeletal remains found in Alleghany, Lee and Pittsylvania counties. “The case has been at a standstill. We are still looking at things, waiting for positive DNA results,” Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner said. “We didn’t know they were going to do facial reconstructions, but we are glad they did. Hopefully somebody might recognize them.” Gardner said he believes the unveiling of the facial reconstructions is something new for the area. At least it’s something he’s not aware of taking place in the past. Regardless, he is glad the Cana remains were added to the list. The reconstructions will be made available to the media on Jan. 16. “I am excited they did it. We will stand a much better chance of someone being able to identify the person,” Gardner said. Anyone with information that may lead to the identities of these individuals is asked to call the Chief Medical Examiner, Western District at (540) 561-6615. |
