Skeletal Remains Found During State Sweep Under H-1 Viaduct POSTED: 12:44 pm HST February 14, 2012 UPDATED: 3:23 pm HST February 14, 2012 Email Print 0 comments Honolulu police said the skeletal remains of an unidentified person were found by a homeless man during a state sweeping of property underneath the H-1 viaduct Monday morning. The remains were found around 8:30 a.m. Monday underneath the H-1 freeway viaduct between Ahua and Kakoi Streets in the Mapunapuna area. Officials from the Department of Transportation, who was conducting the sweep, said that a homeless man alerted them to the remains in a "very low" area under the viaduct. The area required crawling to access. Police criminal investigators said the remains have not yet been identified and that there were no immediate signs of foul play. The Honolulu Medical Examiner is inspecting the remains to verify identification. The sweep is a regularly scheduled clearing of trash and homeless camping property conducted every six months on state land underneath the viaduct, according to Department of Transportation spokesman Dan Meisenzahl. The cleanup continued Tuesday and is expected to last in the Keehi area until Thursday. Sweeps in other areas, including Wahiawa and the makai side of Nimitz Highway from Pier 19, will be conducting following this sweep. Material that is found during the sweeps is thrown away Read more: http://www.kitv.com/news/30458696/detail.html#ixzz1mPoudMKy |
