Body that washed up last month still unidentified
Published On Wed Feb 08 2012
Curtis Rush Police Reporter

Toronto police haven’t been able to identify a body found in Lake Ontario last month.

A dog out for a walk with its owner stumbled upon remains that had washed up on shore near the Boulevard Club at 1401 Lake Shore Blvd. W. on Jan 19.

A coroner ruled that the cause of death was undetermined, but there was no trauma to the body and the man was not believed to have died from an illness.

Due to the condition of the body, police believed it had been in the water since the fall.

Police thought they had a lead when they discovered that a missing person whose empty fishing boat was spotted off Ashbridge’s Bay last September was still an open investigation in Durham Region.

However, after contacting Durham police and dental records were examined of the missing boater, any link was ruled out.

Police have contacted U.S. border states with the chance that some family member is missing a loved one.

The man is described as light-skinned, either Caucasian or Asian, between the ages of 20 and 50.

The man was heavy-set and had dark-coloured facial stubble and white dental fillings.

The autopsy showed that he had an appendectomy at some point.

“We just want to be able to give his loved ones a chance to have a proper funeral and burial,” Det. Jos Matys said.

If the body is not claimed for a few months, it will buried in a state-sponsored pauper’s funeral.

However, police have taken a DNA sample and that will be kept on file in case a relative comes forth even 10 years from now.
