Disappearance of Mesa man remains a mystery
85-year-old went missing during daily walk 1 year ago

The Arizona Republic

A year after an 85-year-old man mysteriously disappeared during his daily walk on Christmas Eve, his family is still searching for answers.

Hugh Turner was never found despite an extensive search by Mesa police, volunteers and Arizona Search Track and Rescue.

"It's pretty rare when we don't fine any resolution whatsoever,'' Mesa police Detective Steve Berry said Friday.

Although the case remains open, there have been no leads for months, so Turner's family will gather Saturday in northeast Mesa to remember him and to release balloons containing messages for him.

The private family gathering is an attempt to find closure in the absence of a funeral, memorial service or burial.

"It would be a wonderful Christmas gift to my family if someone anonymously told us where my father was,'' said Steve Turner, Hugh's son.

"My mom wants to know what happened. She would like to know he didn't suffer, that he passed away quietly.''

Hugh Turner, a snowbird from Edmonton, Alberta, was married to his wife, Joyce, for 60 years.

They had celebrated that anniversary a year earlier by taking an Alaskan cruise.

Steve Turner said the family followed every possible lead, including psychics who cited GPS coordinates where Hugh Turner supposedly could be found. More than 17,000 fliers were distributed during the search in January and February.

Possible sightings were reported by a pizza-delivery driver, who said he swerved one night to avoid hitting a man walking in the middle of McDowell Road, and a jogger who saw a man in Las Sendas.

But all the sightings led nowhere, leaving the family no closer to finding Turner on Saturday than when he disappeared during his daily 20-minute walk in the Red Mountain subdivision of east Mesa.

Turner had spent 20 winters in east Mesa. Steve Turner said his father was a remarkably vital man for his age, working out three days a week and playing golf three times a week.

Countless scenarios have played through the Turners' minds, including that Hugh Turner may have suffered a stroke and somehow become disoriented or that he had been struck by a hit-and-run driver.

The Turners thanked police and the public for their help. They would be even more thankful for that one anonymous call. Anyone with information is asked to call investigator Laura Colon at 480-644-2014.
