http://www.postbulletin.com/news/stories/d....php?id=1469812 Austin detective hopes to heat up cold case Posted: Sep 27, 2011, 10:13 am By Kay Fate The Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN Todd Clennon was about 10 years old when Mary Jo Lee Long left Austin for what might have been the last time. Today, Clennon is detective Clennon with the Austin Police Department, and he's the lead investigator on a case that's been cold for nearly 30 years. At age 17, Long left her childhood home in Minnesota to live with her father in California. She was last seen in Austin in December 1981. A half-sister had spent Christmas with her that year. By all accounts, though, Long had returned to California. So how come a police detective in Austin is in charge of finding her? Find out in Tuesday's print edition. |

Austin Opens 30 Year Old Cold Case (ABC 6 News) -- Tuesday marked the 30 year anniversary of an Austin teen's disappearance. "She disappeared shortly after Christmas of 1981, said Detective Todd Clennon with the Austin Police Department. It was thirty years ago when Austin teen, Mary Jo Long was seen for the last time. She was a student here at Austin High School. At the age of 17, she went to live with her father in California, without her mother's approval. Long enrolled at Gardena California High School that spring. Three months later she disappeared. Detective Clennon tells us he searched through California records and there was no mention of her disappearance. Prior to that, there's no entries from NCIC so it appears as though, although she went missing in California, California authorities were never notified of her disappearance, said Clennon. A report wouldn't be filed for another 7 years, but not in California, rather, here in Austin. So now, just six months on the case, Detective Clennon is hoping with today's technology, he'll be able to crack the case. A big one is DNA testing, something that they couldn't do in the 80's "Dental records were recently sent to California Department of Justice and revisited. They made some changes in the dental charting and are working through comparisons out there at this time, said Clennon. They are busy contacting relatives for clues. "Collecting samples from family members so that they can be uploaded into the University of Texas database, to be compared to other individuals that are in the system, said Clennon. He's determined to put this case, to rest. "Somebody knows. Somebody knows what happened to Mary Jo and we just got to find them, said Clennon. Detective Clennon is now working with detectives from California, and even Arizona, that's where Long's father and brother are now living. If anyone has information about Mary Jo Long's disappearance, they are urged to contact police. http://kaaltv.com/article/stories/s2430096.shtml |
