INVESTIGATORS are awaiting forensic and DNA test results to confirm whether human remains found in Hornsby bushland are those of Aubrey John Joseph Neilsen, who was reported missing in September 1961.
The bones were discovered by a resident walking in bushland on May 22.
A search of the area, near Watson Ave, last Thursday recovered further human remains.
Another search last Friday found a .303 calibre rifle near more bones.
Searchers also found several pre-decimal Australian coins dating from the 1940s to early 1960s, and an engraved watch.
Investigators believe the death, which is not considered suspicious, probably occurred between 1961 and 1966.
Inquiries with the Missing Persons Unit are continuing.
Any relatives of Mr Neilsen, or anyone was an acquaintance of the then 51-year-old, is should call Hornsby police on or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Only after the last tree has been
cut down;
Only after the last fish has been
caught;
Only after the last river has been
poisoned;
Only then will you realize
that money cannot be eaten.
