Parents of missing St Albans man Murray Thompson renew appeal one year on

8:41am Tuesday 19th April 2011

* By Manisha Mistry »

The family of missing Murray Thompson, who is believed to have been murdered, have told of the heartbreak and devastation they have endured since his disappearance one year ago.

Murray Thompson, who is from St Albans and was 34 years old at the time of his disappearance, will have been missing for a year on April 20, 2011.

Detectives from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit launched a murder investigation soon after Murray's disappearance, which has centred on the Watford area after locating a flat in St Albans Road where is it believed he last visited.

His work van was seen in St Albans Road/Leavesden Road in Watford close to the time he went missing and was discovered in Robin Hood Drive in Bushey a fortnight later.

His parents Geraldine Woodstock and Tony Thompson said: “April 20 is without doubt the darkest day in our lives. It is exactly one year ago that our son Murray disappeared off the face of the earth.

“Despite continuous police investigations we are no nearer to discovering either what happened to him on that day or where he is now.

“Many previous appeals have been made by us in the press and on local radio including the offer of a £5,000 reward for information.

“Please, is there anyone out there who can come forward with any information to help us come to terms with whatever has happen to our son?”

Murray’s parents are offering a reward of up to £5,000 for information which leads to the whereabouts of Murray being identified or information which could lead to the conviction of anyone involved in his disappearance.

To mark the anniversary, police cars in Watford, St Albans and Hemel Hempstead will be carrying appeal posters with a photo of Murray and publicising the reward.

Detective Inspector Jerome Kent from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit said: “I cannot imagine the pain Murray’s family are going through at this time and I know there is a lot of public support with many people keen to find out what has happened to Murray.

“This is still a very active investigation and our main thrust is trying to locate Murray so his family can give him a proper funeral and to lay him to rest.

“I am confident there are people who are withholding information which could help us find Murray. I would ask these people to put themselves in the Geraldine and Tony’s shoes and consider just how devastated you would be and how important it would be for you if someone came forward with that vital piece of information.”

A man from Watford was charged on March 8 in connection with the murder investigation. James Evans, aged 22 and of Bushey Mill Lane was charged with perverting the course of justice, preventing a lawful burial and three counts of producing cannabis. He has been remanded into custody.

A 46-year-old man from Watford and a 31-year-old man from Rickmansworth who were both arrested on suspicion of murder are currently on police bail pending further enquiries.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 01707 355959 or alternatively call Crimestoppers, the independent charity, anonymously on 0800 555111.

A MAN has been charged by detectives investigating the disappearance and murder of St Albans man Murray Thompson.

Police believe Murray Thompson has been murdered. Murray Thompson

James Evans, 22, of Bushey Mill Lane, Watford, was charged yesterday with perverting the course of justice, preventing a lawful burial and three counts of producing cannabis.

He appeared at Hatfield Remand Court this afternoon (Wednesday), and was remanded in custody to appear at St Albans Crown Court, on May 16.

Five other men were also arrested in connection with the case.

Two of them, a 46-year-old Watford man and a 31-year-old man from Rickmansworth were questioned on suspicion of murder. Both answered bail yesterday and were rebailed by Hertfordshire Constabulary.

Officers, however, have released without charge a 23-year-old-man and a 36-year-old man, both from Watford.

A decision was made in January to release another 57-year-old man from Chiswell Green after he too was arrested in connection with the mysterious case.

Mr Thompson, 34, of St Peters Street, St Albans, was last seen on April 20 last year. Detectives from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit have since focussed a murder investigation in Watford, where his distinctive ‘Gil-Lec’ van was last seen in the Leavesden Road area.

It was later recovered in Robin Hood Drive, Bushey, but Mr Thompson has not been seen or heard of since.

Extensive forensic examinations were also carried out at a flat in St Albans Road, Watford, which is believed to be the last place he visited.

Speaking in December, his parents, Tony and Geraldine, spoke of their grief. They said: “It’s been over seven months without our son and we are still devastated. The pain doesn’t get any easier.

“Words cannot describe how traumatic this has been for us and we are sure that there is someone who knows of Murray’s whereabouts. Put yourself in our shoes and think how you would feel. Do the right thing and call the police.”

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call officers on 01707 355959.

THE family of a missing St Albans man have sent out a heartfelt appeal for information on his whereabouts one month one since his disappearance.

Murray Thompson was last seen by his colleagues on the morning of Monday, April 20.

The 34-year-old's Gil-Lec work van, which was located in Robin Hood Drive, Bushey on May 4, was last seen in the vicinity of St Albans Road and Leavesden Road, Watford, around the time he went missing.

Investigations have been taking place at a flat in St Albans Road into his disappearance. Officers say this flat had previously been visited by Murray.

His mother Geraldine, of Hemel Hempstead, and his father Tony, of Chipperfield, said: “It is completely out of character for Murray not to contact us because he’ll know we’re worried about him. He is our only son and is close to us.

“Murray is very loyal and when he makes friends he keeps them for life. He has a large group of friends and he’s known as being very calm and laid back, as well as always having a smile on his face.

“Murray is very determined and when he sets his mind to things he will achieve them. He is extremely passionate about marshall arts and instructs Wing Tsun.

“We’re very concerned about him. Please Murray, get in touch in whatever way you can.”

Murray is described as white, 5 foot 10 inches tall, of a medium build with short, straight, dark brown hair. He is clean shaven and has three earrings in his right ear and two in his left ear.

Detectives from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit are investigating his disappearance. Detective Inspector Jerome Kent said: “It is now a month that Murray has been missing and his family are clearly desperate for news about him. Continued support is being given to the family through this difficult time.

“Our concern for Murray is growing and as the investigation continues we are piecing together Murray’s last movements but need the public’s help. I would strongly urge anyone who may have information about his whereabouts or if you believe you have seen him, either that day or subsequently in the areas of St Albans, Watford or Bushey, to contact police immediately.”

Any information, however small you think it may be could prove vital to the investigation. Please contact the police through the incident room on 01707 355959 on the non-emergency number 0845 33 00 222. Alternatively you can give information confidentially by calling Crimestoppers, the independent charity, on 0800 555111.

Murray Thompson's girlfriend speaks of events at time when he vanished
11:40am Tuesday 14th August 2012 in News By Court Reporter

THE fiancee of Murray Thompson, the man alleged to have been murdered at a cannabis factory, told a court how she went there the day after his disappearance.

Rachel McDowell, who lived with Mr Thompson in St Peters Street, St Albans, gave evidence about the day in April 2010 when she went to the flat above a shop in Watford.

She hadn't seen her boyfriend since the previous day and was concerned he had not come home.

Miss McDowell told St Albans Crown Court she knew Murray was involved in tending the cannabis plants that were growing in the flat above a chemist shop in St Albans Road, Watford.

On the afternoon of Wednesday April 21, 2010, she drove there after Mr Thompson, 34, had not come home the previous night.

After banging on the door she said James Evans opened it.

Evans, 23, from Bushey Mill Lane, Watford, denies murder, conspiracy to produce cannabis, and two counts of doing acts to pervert the course of justice.

.Lee Sullivan, 47, also of Watford, denies perverting the course of justice and four charges of intimidating a witness.

During the trial the jury has been told that Mr Thompson, a courier driver with a company in Hemel Hempstead, also worked as a "gardener" at a number of cannabis factories that had been set up in properties around Watford.

It was his job, along with Mr Evans, to tend and feed the plants.

Sullivan is the man who the prosecution allege was the boss of the criminal enterprise.

Mr Thompson was last seen alive on Tuesday April 20, 2010, when he went to the flat above the chemist shop that afternoon.

The crown claim Evans was also there and at some point murdered him and then disposed of the body so that it has never been found.

Continuing her evidence, Miss McDowell told the jury she knew about Murray's work at the cannabis factories and she and her fiance had once met Lee Sullivan and his girlfriend at a pub.

She said she had also met James Evans before.

Miss McDowell said as she arrived in Watford on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 21, her car broke down near the flat.

She said she then made her way to the front door and began banging loudly but no one answered.

She said Mr Thompson's van was parked nearby and was locked.

She said she went back to her vehicle and waited but then returned to the flat once more and knocked again.

This time she said James Evans answered.

Miss McDowell went on "I asked him if he had seen Murray and he said he had not seen him since the day before when he said he was leaving.

"I asked him what time Murray left and he said around 7pm on the Tuesday. He said 'He has probably gone off on one,' and I said that wasn't like Murray."

She said when she told him her car had broken down and she was going to wait for Murray to see if he returned to his van, Mr Evans said he would drive her back to St Albans.

"He drove me home, it was his idea. I wanted to wait and I wasn't interested in going home. I wanted to see if Murray came back to his van. "I told him I didn't want to go and he asked me for my contact number and said when he saw Murray he would ring me. He said 'I promise you Rachel I will call you." she said.

Miss McDowell said on the way to St Albans, Mr Evans passed her his mobile phone so she could speak to Lee Sullivan.

"I said it was unlike Murray not to contact me if he had gone off somewhere. Lee said 'Don't worry he'll be back and if we find out anything we'll let you know."

Mss McDowell told the jury that by the Thursday - April 22 - she had spoken to the police about Murray's disappearance, but said she had been "nervous" because of his involvement with the cannabis factory.

She said she had been afraid too to tell police about James Evans and Lee Sullivan.

In the days that followed she said she spoke to Lee Sullivan again on the phone. "He started shouting at me about the police ringing him and I was s*** stirring and needed to shut up. So from that point I got very emotional and I got quite scared because that was the first time he was threatening and forceful over the phone."

Asked what she thought Mr Sullivan had meant by telling her to shut up, she replied "Not to let the police know what had been happening."

Murray Thompson murder trial: Father 'unaware of drugs'
Murray Thompson tended to cannabis plants in a flat above a shop Continue reading the main story

Cannabis grower 'killed at flat'
The father of a man allegedly murdered at a cannabis factory has told a jury he had no idea his son was involved in a drugs operation.

Murray Thompson, 34, of St Albans, disappeared in April 2010. St Albans Crown Court was told he tended cannabis plants at a Watford flat.

James Evans, 23, of Watford, denies murder. A body has not been found.

Anthony Thompson said: "I had been aware he [Murray] put a bit of stuff in a roll up, nothing else."

Mr Evans is on trial with Lee Sullivan, 47, also of Watford, who denies perverting the course of justice and four charges of intimidating a witness.

The jury has heard Mr Sullivan rented flats in the town for the growing of cannabis and Mr Thompson and Mr Evans tended the plants.

The prosecution's case is that Mr Thompson turned up at one of the flats, above a chemists on St Albans Road, and was murdered by Mr Evans on 20 April, 2010.

Prosecutor John Price QC said whatever happened, it had caused the victim to "shed a great deal of blood".

'Free-spirited'

Mr Thompson senior said he and his son were "very close" and saw each other for the last time for a meal on 9 April.

In a statement read to the jury, Mr Thompson's mother, Geraldine Woodstock, said: "Murray gets on with everyone and is a free-spirited, easy going young man."

She said she last saw him on Mother's Day, 14 March 2010, when he gave her some plants.

The court has heard Mr Evans, of Bushey Mill Lane, and Mr Sullivan, of Hudson Close, "harvested" a crop of cannabis from the flat and then cleared it and redecorated.

Mr Thompson's van was driven away and Mr Evan's Vauxhall Corsa scrapped because it had been used to transport the body, Mr Price said.

Mr Evans also denies conspiracy to produce cannabis and two counts of doing acts to pervert the course of justice.

The trial continues.

ShareFacebookTwitter.Cannabis grower Murray Thompson 'killed at Watford flat'
Murray Thompson tended to cannabis plants in a flat above a shop A "gardener" at a cannabis factory in Hertfordshire who went missing more than two years ago was murdered by another grower, a court has heard.

Murray Thompson, of St Albans, has not contacted his family since he disappeared in April 2010, aged 34.

James Evans, 23, denies murder and Lee Sullivan, 47, both of Watford, denies perverting the course of justice.

St Albans Crown Court heard the motive was unknown and a body has never been found.

Mr Thompson, a courier driver, was last seen arriving in his van near a flat which was one of five Mr Sullivan had rented in Watford for the growing of cannabis.

He was then murdered in the flat by Mr Evans, who disposed of his body, said Mr John Price QC, for the prosecution.

"It is not possible to state how he died because his body has not been found," he added.

"But whatever happened to Murray Thompson... we do know it was something which caused him to shed a great deal of blood."

Mr Evans, of Bushey Mill Lane, and Mr Sullivan, of Hudson Close, "harvested" a crop of cannabis from the flat and then cleared it and redecorated.

The van was driven away and Mr Evan's Vauxhall Corsa scrapped because it had been used to transport the body, Mr Price said.

Two landlords of rented flats, Mr Thompson's fiancee and Mr Sullivan's ex-girlfriend, received threats to deter them from co-operating with police, the court heard.

Mr Evans also denies conspiracy to produce cannabis and two counts of doing acts to pervert the course of justice.

Mr Sullivan also denies four charges of intimidating a witness.

The trial continues.

Detectives search in Watford for body of missing St Albans man Murray Thompson

DETECTIVES have been searching around Watford in the past few weeks for the body of missing St Albans man Murray Thompson.

As part of the ongoing murder investigations officers have been trying to locate the 34-year-old's body and are urgently appealing for more information on his whereabouts.

A number of open spaces have been searched and most recently, in May, a specialist survey boat and a team of divers carried out a search of a fishing lake in Cassiobury Park in Watford.

Detective Inspector Jerome Kent and a team of detectives from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit have been investigating since Murray went missing on April 20, 2010.

“The torture of not knowing where Murray is located is unimaginable for his parents and having been in regular contact with them I know that they are not able to move forward until he is found.

“Our searches have been predominantly concentrated in the Watford area and I believe the people who hold the key to finding him are in Watford or the surrounding areas.

"You may have overheard a comment made about his death or rumours about where he may be. I implore you to tell us where he is so his parents can have the opportunity to give him a proper burial.”

Anyone with information can provide information can telephone the incident room on 01707 355959.

Four men have been charged in connection with the investigation:

•32-year-old Shafakat Ali Khan, from Rose Gardens, in Watford, was arrested and charged with perverting the course of justice. He has been released on police bail.
•22-year-old James Evans, of Bushey Mill Lane, in Watford, has been charged with murder, perverting the course of justice, preventing a lawful burial and three counts of producing cannabis. He has been remanded into custody.
•46-year-old Lee Sullivan, of Hudson Close, in Watford, was charged with perverting the course of justice, conspiracy to produce cannabis and four offences of intimidation of a witness. He has been remanded into custody.

Police activity at Watford flat could be linked to St Albans missing man
4:40pm Sunday 16th May 2010 in News By Manisha Mistry

Police activity at Watford flat could be linked to St Albans missing man FORENSIC tents set up behind a Watford flat this afternoon could be linked to a St Albans man's missing persons case, residents have revealed.

It is believed police have been at the home in Victoria Road for the last week.

An officer outside the back of the flat said all he could reveal was that it was a “crime scene”.

However punters at the Glenn Social and Sports Club say rumours have been spreading about a missing man Murray Thompson whose van was seen in the street at the time he went missing.

On May 6 Hertfordshire Constabulary sent out a missing persons appeal to trace the 34-year-old from St Albans.

He went missing from his home in St Peter's Street and his white Volkswagen panel van was recovered in Robin Hood Drive, Bushey.

One resident who asked not to be named said posters have been stuck up in the area to trace Mr Thompson and he is led to believe the police activity is related to his disappearance.

Accused met Murray Thompson on day of disappearance
5:20pm Wednesday 5th September 2012 in News

Accused met Murray Thompson on day of disappearance THE man accused of murdering Murray Thompson at a Watford cannabis factory told a jury on Monday he had met him there on the day he disappeared, but said they had left together and gone their separate ways.

James Evans said he had gone to the flat above a chemist shop in St Albans Road , Watford, to meet Murray, who wanted him to carry out some decorating work there.

He said after looking around the flat and seeing what needed to be done, it was agreed he would carry out the work as a way of paying off a drug debt for £180 which he owed Murray, who lived in St Albans with his girlfriend.

At around 7pm on the evening of April 20 2010 - the last day 34 year old Murray was seen alive - Mr Evans said they both left the flat after it was agreed he would start the work the next day.

He told the jury at St Albans crown court "We left at the same time. As we came out of the flat his van was to the left and my car was to the right. I got in my car and drove off and I didn't see where he went."

It's claimed by the prosecution that while the two men were in the flat, Mr Evans murdered Murray, whose body has never been found.

In the witness box, Mr Evans told the jury Murray Thompson was taller than him and "bigger" and a martial arts instructor. If they had fought he said he would have come out the loser.

Earlier Mr Evans said that he knew Murray Thompson was involved in the production of cannabis at a number of rented properties in the Watford area.

He said he had first met him in 2007 and described him as a nice person, but who was "a bit of a dodgy fella, ducking and diving and doing things he shouldn't."

Mr Evans said he had started using cannabis when he was 16 while at college and he said Murray Thompson was someone who would supply him with the drug.

Mr Evans said that in 2007 Murray told him that he wanted someone to live in one of the houses that was operating as a cannabis factory.

He said at the time he was not getting on with his father who he was living with and so he took up the offer and went to live in the house in Sutton Road, Watford.

The prosecution claim that both Murray Thompson and James Evans were "gardeners" whose job it was to tend and water cannabis plants being grown at various addresses in Watford.

During the trial the prosecution have said it wasn't known what the motive for the killing was, but it had taken place against a background of "serious, organised criminal activity involving the production for commercial supply of controlled drugs."

James Evans, 24, of Bushey Mill Lane, Watford, pleads not guilty to murdering Murray. He also denies conspiracy to produce cannabis and two counts of doing acts to pervert the course of justice.

Lee Sullivan, 47, of Hudson Road, Watford, who is said to be the "chief executive" of the criminal operation to grow skunk cannabis, denies perverting the course of justice and four charges of intimidating a witness

Man found guilty of murdering Murray Thompson - St Albans

27/09/2012

A man from Watford has today, Thursday, 27 September 2012, been found guilty at St Albans Crown Court of the murder of St Albans man, Murray Thompson.

It took eleven jurors 2-days to deliberate on their verdicts following a 7-week long trial.

The jury was taken through a 2-year long investigation that had amassed over 600 written statements, over 1700 exhibits and involved 90 police officers and staff.

Murray, aged 34, was last seen at a property in St Albans Road, Watford on 20 April 2010.

James Evans, aged 24, of Bushey Mill Lane, Watford, was found guilty of Murray's murder, two counts of perverting the course of justice, of which one was for disposing of Murray's body, and conspiracy to produce cannabis.

A second man was on trial alongside James Evans. Lee Sullivan, aged 48, from Hudson Close, Watford, was charged with perverting the course of justice, conspiracy to produce cannabis and four counts of intimidation of witnesses. Sullivan pleaded guilty at the beginning of the trail to conspiracy to producing cannabis and was subsequently found guilty for perverting the course of justice and three counts of intimidation of witnesses.

A third man was found guilty at an earlier trial in November 2011 of perverting the course of justice, conspiracy to produce cannabis and intimidation of a witness. Amit Agar, aged 32, from Parkfield, Chorleywood, was sentenced to 7-years imprisonment and ordered to pay £50,000 costs.

Murray's disappearance prompted a major inquiry in which police officers and staff undertook a detailed and painstaking investigation in an attempt to discover what happened to Murray. A media campaign was launched to try to find Murray, supported and often fronted by family members.

Murray's family also offered a £5,000 reward for information, which might lead to the whereabouts and recovery of Murray. This was backed by Crimestoppers, the independent charity, but no one came forward with that information.

Murray's body has never been found and none of the convicted people have spoken during interview about where his body might be.

Baljit Ubhey OBE, Chief Crown Prosecutor for Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said: "We have worked closely with the police since this investigation was launched. This was a tragic crime, which led to the untimely death of Murray Thompson. The fact that Murray's body has never been found makes this crime all the more upsetting.

"Historically, cases of this type have been hard to prove, the prosecution must rely on other evidence, usually circumstantial. Recent developments in forensic science make it less likely that such a murder will go unpunished. The jury found Evans guilty of murdering Murray, despite his denials and the absence of a body.

"Both Evans and Sullivan were involved in the cannabis factory business with Murray, and Sullivan assisted Evans with the clean up operation after Murray's murder, the disposal of evidence, and sought to intimidate vital witnesses.

"The Crown Prosecution Service praises the strength and courage of Murray's family who have sat through the trial and listened to the circumstantial evidence, which led to the conclusion that Murray was killed at an address in St Albans Road, Watford by Evans.

"As a result of the hard work and diligence of the prosecution team, a just outcome has been achieved for the victim and his family. We hope that the convictions will in some way help the family come to terms with this tragic event. Although, I understand that they will not be able to move forward with their lives until Murray has been found and laid to rest. Our thoughts are very much with them at this time."

Following the verdict, Murray's father, Tony Thompson said: "This has been a long ordeal, with two trials over a combined 14-weeks of court. Im naturally pleased with the verdict. I hope now we can start moving on with our lives. However, Murray is still daily in our thoughts. Until we put him to rest, it'll always be nagging in our minds about where he is.

"I would like to thank DI Kent and his team for their hard work and persistence over the past two and a half years, and QC John Price and his assistant Sandra Beck for being so supportive throughout the trial. I'd also like to thank my friends for their daily phone calls and support at court, as well as the jury for their patience and dedication to the trial."

Detective Inspector Jerome Kent from the Joint Major Crime Unit who led the investigation said: "This murder conviction follows painstaking work carried out by the team of detectives from the joint Beds, Herts and Cambs Major Crime Unit, alongside various specialists, who have all worked to prove Murray's death and, working alongside the CPS, we've ensured this conviction could be secured.

"Throughout our investigation we've learnt a lot about Murray and, who despite being involved in drugs, was a kind man who was loyal to his family and had a large group of friends. I would like to thank the family and friends of Murray who gave considerable support to police during the investigation.

"Lee Sullivan, James Evans and Amit Agar clearly set about 'covering up' Murray's death and the cannabis operation, by a sustained campaign of intimidating people who they believed were feeding information to police.

"I am pleased the jury have come to these guilty verdicts. It has been an incredibly challenging case, particularly because Murray's body has never been found. For Murray's parents the anguish they have faced since Murray went missing is unimaginable. Their bravery and strength is admirable. However, I know that finding Murray means more to them than the verdict today. They desperately want to put Murray to rest and say goodbye properly.

"I believe that James Evans, Lee Sullivan and Amit Agar know where Murray is, but they have always refused to give any assistance to the police and actively engaged in disrupting the police enquiry.

"We are still looking for Murray's body and would ask anyone with information to contact us via the Herts Police non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers, the independent charity, anonymously on 0800 555 111."
