Deseret News, The (Salt Lake City, UT) June 13, 1998 Edition: Metro Section: News Page: B4 Garfield police release sketch of slaying victim Author: Jennifer Dobner, staff writer Article Text: Police in Garfield County and the Utah Department of Public Safety have released a composite drawing they hope will help them identify the body of a woman found slain at Lake Powell in April. The photo was generated by computer and is based on autopsy photos, said Department of Public Safety special agent Mike Rufener. The woman was found April 20 about 33 miles north of Bullfrog Marina on Lake Powell. Her body was wrapped in a sleeping bag and appeared to have been dumped over an 8-foot cliff off State route 276. Two West Valley residents on vacation discovered the body and contacted the Garfield County Sheriff's Office. The woman died from a single gunshot wound to the back of her head. Police have canvassed the area between Bullfrog and Cortez, Colo., and have been unable to identify the woman, Rufener said. Police believe the woman is between 37 and 45 years old and of either Hispanic or Native American heritage. She is 5 feet, 1/2-inch tall, 112 pounds and has dark brown eyes and shoulder-length wavy brown hair. Other features that might identify the woman are facial freckles, tattooed eyebrows and small dark moles on her right ear, chin, upper lip and left shoulder, police said. Anyone who recognizes the photo should contact Garfield County Sheriff Than Cooper, 1-435- 676-2678 or the Utah Department of Public Safety in Salt Lake City, toll free at 1-800-826-2215. |

Salt Lake Tribune, The (UT) April 28, 1998 Edition: Final Page: B2 Topics: Index Terms: UT; Homicide; Deaths; Law Enforcement Operations Garfield Cops Seek ID of Slain Woman Author: MICHAEL VIGH THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE; Salt Lake Tribune Article Text: Police in Garfield County are trying to identify a murdered woman whose mutilated body was found in a sleeping bag in southern Utah on April 20. Investigators are unsure how long the body was in the area and they have no suspects, said Garfield County Attorney Wallace A. Lee. Initial examinations by the state medical examiner indicate the woman was shot, execution style, in the back of the neck and duct tape was found around her head, hands and waist, Lee said. ``After death, the woman's fingers were cut off with a sharp instrument,'' Lee said. The body had apparently frozen at some point, he said. The National Weather Service reports the temperature was below freezing the day before the body was found in Hanksville, some 40 miles from Ticaboo. The body was discovered by a couple who had been hiking in the Maiden Spring area near Lake Powell on state Highway 276. The Garfield County Sheriff's Office and Park Service responded to the scene. Later, the Utah State Medical Examiner's Office was contacted along with the state Crime Lab Investigation Unit. Lee said 1994 was the last time a murder was committed in Garfield County. Police are seeking help from anyone who may be able to identify the victim. Police say the woman was approximately 40 years of age with brown hair and eyes, and weighed 110 pounds. Anyone with information is asked to call the Garfield County Sheriff's Department at (435) 676-2678. |
