http://edition.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/11/27/mi...ssing.children/ 3 Michigan boys missing after father drops them off to attempt suicide By the CNN Wire Staff November 28, 2010 -- Updated 0250 GMT (1050 HKT) (CNN) -- Police and neighbors were searching for three young Michigan boys Saturday who have been missing since their father claimed he dropped them off with a woman before trying to kill himself a day earlier. The father survived his suicide attempt and is being cared for in a mental health facility, said Morenci, Michigan, Police Chief Larry Weeks on Saturday. But Michigan authorities do not know what has happened to his boys -- 5-year-old Tanner Skelton, 7-year-old Alexander William Skelton and 9-year-old Andrew Skelton -- prompting them to issue an Amber Alert on Friday. Weeks said that the boys' father, John Skelton, told police that he dropped the boys off Friday morning with a woman he identified as Joann Taylor -- in part to ensure they didn't see him while and after he tried to commit suicide. John Skelton told police that the woman, whom he allegedly met on the internet, was supposed to drop the boys off at their home in Morenci, a southern Michigan town of about 2,400 people about 40 miles west-northwest of Toledo, around 3 p.m. Friday. But the boys never went home and, Weeks added, authorities still aren't sure if John Skelton's story -- including Joann Taylor's existence -- is true or a fabrication. "We have not been able to locate a Joann Taylor or confirm that she even exists," Weeks told reporters Saturday evening. The last non-family member saw the boys at 5 p.m. on Thursday, according to the chief. Their mother, Tanya, has been with police "virtually the entire day" on Saturday, answering questions and serving as what Weeks called a "valuable resource at this time." Weeks said Tanya Skelton had "contact with someone alleging to be Joann," adding only that this communication was not necessarily by phone or in person. According to the Amber Alert, Taylor may have been from Jackson or Hillsdale counties and may be driving a silver van. Still, Weeks reiterated that they have yet to confirm she is real and, if so, if she is with the boys. Saturday's press conference was crowded with media and residents of Morenci, many of whom have been searching for the young boys. Dozens spent Saturday searching along Bean Creek, Wakefield Park and the Riverside Natural Area -- all in Morenci -- according to Toledo-based CNN affiliate WUPW. "We just hope they're somewhere safe and warm playing video games," volunteer Carol Garcia told WUPW. But authorities thus far have offered few tips pointing community members to places where the young Skeltons might be. "We understand their drive and desire to be out there," said Weeks. "The fact is, I cannot tell the community there's a specific location they should be searching." The alert notes that Tanner is 3 feet, 6 inches tall, has strawberry blond hair, has blue eyes and weighs about 40 pounds. Alexander is 3 feet, 9 inches tall, has brown hair and eyes, weighs about 45 pounds and has scars on his hairline and chin. The oldest brother, Andrew, is 4 feet, 1 inch tall, has brown hair and eyes and weighs roughly 57 pounds. |

http://www.detnews.com/article/20101128/ME...ee-missing-boys Last Updated: November 28. 2010 4:27PM Police chief: 'We are not leaving any stones unturned' in search for missing boys Mike Wilkinson and Christine MacDonald / The Detroit News Morenci, Mich. - Teams are regrouping for another wave of searching in Lenawee County near the Ohio border for three young boys they fear are in "extreme danger," left by their father with a stranger just before he attempted suicide. A task force of law enforcement agencies, that include the Morenci police, FBI, the Lenawee and Fulton County, Ohio sheriff's departments and the Michigan State Police, are looking for Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton, ages 9, 7, and 5, who were reported missing on Friday. "We are not leaving any stones unturned," said Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks. Investigators completed a search Sunday at Harrison Lake State Park in northwest Ohio, about 10 miles south of Morenci, but turned up no clues, according to the Fulton County Sheriff's Department. Police issued an "Amber Alert" for the boys on Friday, after their father, John Skelton, 39, said he turned the boys over to a woman named Joann Taylor, asking her to take them to the boys mother. Skelton then attempted suicide by hanging. After he failed, he contacted an acquaintance who took him to an Ohio hospital. Now, three days later, police say they cannot find Taylor or even confirm her existence, raising tension in the community as it frantically searches for the boys. Roxann Skelton, John Skelton's mother, said from her Florida home that she's hopeful. "My heart doesn't lie to me," she said. "My heart tells me they're OK." She said she has not talked with her son since the episode began. Groups of law enforcement and volunteers on Sunday also searched the woods around Morenci trying to find any sign of the lost boys. When asked if Skelton was a suspect in the boys' disappearance, Weeks said, "we need to keep our eyes wide open." Skelton, who lives in Morenci, about 75 miles southwest of Detroit and just north of the Ohio state line, is separated from their mother but had been keeping his sons. According to The Blade of Toledo, John Skelton posted a message on his Facebook page seeking forgiveness. In the posting, he allegedly wrote, "I love my wife very much. May God and Tanya forgive me." It was posted on Wednesday, two days before the boys were reported missing. He told investigators Friday he wanted the boys out of his house when he committed suicide and that he had asked the Taylor to take them to their mother. Skelton said he met Taylor several years ago and that the two had been involved in an online relationship. She was believed to live in Jackson or Hillsdale counties in southern Michigan. But officers Saturday had no success tracking down a woman by that name or the silver van Skelton said she was driving. "The bulk of our action has been putting together a timeline and trying to locate this Joann Taylor," Weeks said. On Sunday, a Michigan State Police forensics truck was parked outside Skelton's house on Congress. "We've never encountered anything like this," said Renee Schroeder, the city administrator who has lived in this town, the southernmost in the state, for nearly 60 years. Weeks said the boys were last seen Thursday between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. in the 100 block of East Congress by a citizen of Morenci. On Sunday afternoon, volunteers gathered at the Morenci fire hall awaiting instruction while investigators conducted aerial searches. Searchers were expected to head out again on foot afterward. Jeff Glore, 43, of Adrian, said he volunteered for the search because he was "torn up by the story." "I just have a heart for children," said Glore, who has a five-week-old baby. "I don't think this town knows what to do." |

Police call off search for 3 missing Michigan boys; Skelton allegedly confesses December 2nd, 2010 9:55 am ET. Thursday, police asked that searches be called off for the three missing Michigan boys by Friday night; this comes as John Skelton, the boys' father, allegedly confessed to the FBI that he killed them, according to WTVB. The FBI has not confirmed this confession. Search crews and volunteers have been trying to find Andrew Skelton, 9, Alexander William Skelton, 7, and Tanner Skelton, 5, for a week. John Skelton was released Tuesday from a mental institution after he attempted suicide last week. The FBI immediately took him into custody, and he was charged with parental kidnapping. Skelton does not want to be extradited back to Michigan, authorities said Wednesday. His next court appointment is Dec. 14. Local authorities do not know where the boys are. Police said that they do not want to believe that the boys are dead, but that they do not see a positive outcome. Skelton and his wife separated and in August when she filed for divorce, and he took the three boys and fled to Florida. A judge ordered that he return with the boys. http://www.examiner.com/us-headlines-in-na...elton-confesses |

Father of missing boys agrees to extradition Written by Toledo Free Press Staff Writers | | news@toledofreepress.com John Skelton opted Dec. 14 against fighting extradition to Michigan, where he faces parental kidnapping charges in the case of his three missing sons, Andrew, Alexander and Tanner. Appearing Dec. 14 in front of Judge Gary G. Cook in Lucas County Common Pleas Court, Skelton waived his right to an extradition hearing and agreed to be surrendered to Lenawee County authorities. Skelton’s court-appointed attorney, Merle R. Dech of Toledo, told the judge he had spoken with Skelton about his rights in fighting extradition, and Skelton had elected not to exercise them. Skelton spoke little during the hearing, save to answer “yes” to the judge’s questions, but was seen laughing with his lawyer at a few points before the hearing began. Cook agreed that Skelton had given a “knowing, intelligent and voluntary waiver of his rights” and approved his extradition to Lenawee County. Cook agreed to Lucas County assistant prosecutor Jeffrey Lingo’s request that the $3 million bond set for Skelton be continued. Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Lingo said he was not surprised by Skelton changing his mind about fighting extradition. “He was going back, in my opinion, one way or the other,” Lingo said. What was surprising, Lingo said, was the speed with which the extradition paperwork went through the system. The process required a request from Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm to Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland. In the past, Lingo said, he’s known the extradition process to take 90 days or longer. “It’s the quickest one I’ve ever seen, to be honest with you,” he said. Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks, who has been heading the investigation into the three missing Skelton brothers, was in court to testify if needed and to work on arrangements for transporting Skelton to Lenawee County. Skelton’s bond has been set for $30 million, $10 million for each count. The three missing boys have not been seen since Thanksgiving. http://www.toledofreepress.com/tag/alexander-skelton/ |

Search warrant suppressed in Morenci kidnapping case By GINA DAMRON Detroit Free Press Staff Writer Comments (6) Recommend Print E-mail Letter to the editor Share Facebook Twitter FarkIt Digg Del.icio.us Reddit Newsvine Buzz up!A district court judge has ordered the suppression of search warrant documents in the case against a Morenci man accused in the disappearance of his sons. John Skelton is facing parental kidnapping charges in the disappearance of his sons -- Andrew, Alexander and Tanner, ages 9, 7 and 5, respectively -- who have been missing since Thanksgiving. Authorities searched his home soon after the boys were reported missing. Lenawee County Prosecutor Jonathan Poer said he submitted the motion asking the search warrant documents be suppressed because the investigation is ongoing. Judge James Sheridan of the 2A District Court signed the order. According to the order, the documents will be "suppressed pending the conclusion of the investigation or until further order of the judge, or 180 days after the date of the suppression order, whichever comes first." Skelton told police he gave his sons to an acquaintance before attempting suicide, but police have said they found no evidence the woman he described exists. Skelton also has said he gave his sons to an organization, which he has not named. The disappearance prompted residents of the small town near the Ohio border and many from Ohio to fan out in rural areas, searching for the boys. The boys' mother, Tanya Skelton, has said she holds out hope that the children are alive. http://www.lenconnect.com/breaking/x904834...-district-court Morenci missing boys case going back to district court.Zoom Photos. Lad Strayer.John Skelton of Morenci appears Wednesday in Lenawee County Circuit Court for a hearing in the kidnapping case involving his three sons. Morenci missing boys case going back to district court . ADRIAN, Mich. — The criminal prosecution of John Russell Skelton is back to square one. The father of three missing Morenci boys asked Wednesday that his case be sent back to district court for arraignment and a preliminary examination on new kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment charges that were added last month by the Lenawee County Prosecutor’s Office. He was charged in December with parental kidnapping counts that carry a maximum one-year prison term. He now faces potential life prison terms. Circuit Judge Margaret M.S. Noe granted the remand request made by public defender John Glaser. Skelton appeared in court with Glaser only briefly, walking past a line of television news cameras set up for what was to be a pretrial hearing where a trial date was expected to be scheduled. Little apparent progress has been made in solving the case since the Skelton boys went missing on Thanksgiving. Police were called when Andrew, 9, Alexander, 7, and Tanner, 5, were not returned to their mother, Tanya Skelton, the day after their Thanksgiving visit with their father. The Skeltons are in the process of divorcing. Skelton told Noe at a December hearing in the divorce case he was unable to return his sons because he had turned them over to an “organization.” He has since denied harming the boys, but Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks announced Feb. 1 he has changed the focus of his investigation from a missing persons case to a homicide. No arraignment or preliminary examination dates were scheduled Wednesday in district court for Skelton. If he is arraigned this week or next week, an initial hearing would likely be scheduled for March 28 before Judge James E. Sheridan. If a preliminary examination is requested at that time it could be weeks before it takes place. Glaser said Wednesday no decision has been made yet on whether to ask for a preliminary examination where the prosecution would have to show evidence the boys were kidnapped by Skelton. At this point, he said, there is a “50-50” chance for a preliminary examination. Glaser said there are additional police reports he needs to study before he talks to Skelton about options for proceeding. Prosecutor Jonathan Poer said he is prepared to put evidence on the record to support the kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment charges if that is the option Skelton chooses. Poer has declined to publicly discuss details of the ongoing investigation. |

http://www.wtol.com/story/15645301/nearly-...s-still-missing MORENCI, MI (WTOL) - It has been nearly a year since Andrew, Alex and Tanner Skelton captured the hearts of many. However, as we near the anniversary of their disappearance, the boys still have not returned home. The brothers' family and friends will hold a prayer vigil to keep their memory alive on Sunday. "I, as the rest of the community, were in hopes that they would be found and brought home soon. A year is a long time," said Cyndee Sanders, a family friend. Sanders and another family friend, Kathye Herrera, planned the vigil for many reasons, but especially the family. They said the last year has been tough for them, but it is time to regroup. "It's important for the family. I think they need to reaffirm that the community is still there and caring," Herrera said. For the first time, the boys' mother and her two daughters will conduct a prayer vigil. It will be held at Wakefield Park. "It was important for it to be here at the park. It's a place the boys visited often," Sanders said. R&W Nursery donated a Brandywine Maple in the boys' honor. The family chose the tree. "They wanted something that would be big and sturdy, that would continue to be here for many, many years," Herrera said. Soon the color of the tree will turn into a deep purple, making it stand out from the other trees in the park. A plaque with the boys' names will also be mounted by the tree. "It's important to keep the awareness out that we're still looking," Sanders said. "We've not given up hope." Herrera said the year has been full of ups and downs, but she said even on good days, they will never stop looking. "Life goes on, but that doesn't mean that there's a day go by that those boys aren't on their minds and in their hearts," she said. Sanders put together magnets with the boys' picture on it. They can be attached to cars to keep Andrew, Alex and Tanner's faces fresh in the public's minds. If you are interested in purchasing one, contact Sanders at kcsanders@cass.net. Copyright 2011 WTOL. THE BLADE/AMY E. VOIGT Enlarge | Photo Reprints MORENCI, Mich. -- Keeping alive the memories and the search for three missing local boys was the goal of a prayer vigil here Sunday. About 100 people collected in Wakefield Park to pray, to hear tearful stories about Andrew, Alexander, and Tanner Skelton, and to be assured that family and friends will keep the pressure on until the search comes to closure. "This isn't over and we will not have it over until the boys are home. We need to keep looking everywhere we go and we need to spread the word to others," said Kathye Herrera, a friend of the family of the three boys who disappeared nearly one year ago while visiting their father, John Skelton, at his home in Morenci, about 40 miles west of Toledo. "Today the pain and the emptiness is just as great as it was Nov. 27, 2010," Ms. Herrera said of the family left behind, but she said the family's strength and determination have grown. "They will not give up until Andrew, Alex, and Tanner are home where they belong," she said. The boys, aged 9, 7, and 5, respectively, at the time of their disappearance, were remembered fondly by their mother, Tanya Zuvers, 45; two older sisters, Brittany Derby, 24, and Courtney Derby, 20, and their grandmother Beverly Zuvers. No one voiced the belief of law enforcement, that the boys are homicide victims of their father, but the awareness of that possibility was hinted at. Hope that the boys will be found alive has motivated several aggressive efforts to publicize the boys' photos and details about them. The family was selling bracelets for $1 and T-shirts, with the words "Faith, Hope, Love," for $10, with the money to be used to buy magnet signs that can be attached to semitractor trailers to reach all over the country. On hand were four women who participated in the recent Fireball Run Adventurally as members of two of the teams that traveled through eight states of the South to distribute posters bearing the likenesses of missing children, including the three boys. The two teams were sponsored by General Motors Co. and both were on hand in the park with 2011 Chevrolet Camaros. Also Sunday, three trees were planted in Wakefield Park in honor of the boys. Tanya Zuvers said the first tree was donated by R&W Nursery in Morenci. News of the donated tree prompted a couple from Royal Oak, Mich., to sponsor two more trees so each boy has one. A large rock will bear a plaque with a photograph taken of the boys when they went camping at Harrison Lake State Park. Ms. Zuvers said the choice of a Brandywine maple for the boys was appropriate because of its brilliant fall colors. "It's going to get deep, deep red and then almost to a very dark purple. We chose that tree when they told us the color because the fall is one of the boys' and our favorite times of the year," Ms. Zuvers said, recounting a "super-happy" memory of the camping trip just a month before their disappearance, when they enjoyed walks through the woods. She said the plaque will be engraved with the date the boys disappeared and "the date that the resolution takes place." "Words can't begin to describe what all of you and this community means to me and my family," she said. Beverly Zuvers quoted from the Bible and of its admonition about letting go of anger, along with its warning of judgment to come. "We must pray that John Skelton allows God to soften his heart and convince him that he has no other choice than to come forward with where Andrew, Alexander, and Tanner are," Mrs. Zuvers said. "We are not disappointed with the legal system. John is in prison where he belongs, but that man, [Police] Chief Larry Weeks, standing in the middle of you will not give up until he finds those three boys." Flyers that have been distributed throughout the nation by Team GM and Team Chevy during a prayer vigil in Wakefield Park near the three trees planted in honor of the Skelton brothers. As she shared her memory, Courtney Derby recounted that the boys always wanted to help her wash her car, and recalled one specific occasion when they doused her with water from the bucket and the hose. "It was really hard this summer every time I washed my car and they weren't there to help me," she said. Skelton was sentenced Sept. 15 in Lenawee County Circuit Court in Adrian to 10 to 15 years in prison after pleading no contest to unlawful imprisonment. Police said early on that they suspected he killed his children and have said tracking of his cell phone put him near Holiday City in Williams County, Ohio, about 5 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving. Skelton's claims that he turned the boys over to an underground sanctuary have been ridiculed as lies by law enforcement authorities. He and their mother had been going through a contentious divorce. She had exclusive custody but agreed to let the boys visit him for Thanksgiving if he returned them the next day. Contact Tom Troy at tomtroy@theblade.com or 419-724-6058. |

http://www.lenconnect.com/news/x76464020/E...s-disappearance Event planned for one-year anniversary of Skelton boys’ disappearance Top Stories Posted 3 hour(s) ago By Staff reports Daily Telegram Posted Nov 13, 2011 @ 04:12 PM Print Comment MORENCI, Mich. — The family of the missing Skelton boys is planning an observance for the one-year anniversary of their disappearance. Family friend Kathye Herrera said Tanya Zuvers, the boys’ mother, and her family are working to make the event at 2 p.m. Nov. 27 at the Morenci High School gym “different than a prayer vigil and give the people attending a program.” The family will thank the community for their help in trying to bring home Andrew, Alexander and Tanner, who were 9, 7 and 5 when they disappeared Thanksgiving weekend last year. Hundreds of volunteers combed the countryside around Morenci looking for the boys for a week after they disappeared, drawing national attention to the community. They were last seen with their father, John Skelton, who was sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison after pleading no contest to unlawfully imprisoning his sons. He claims he gave them to an underground organization to prevent Zuvers from having custody. The two were estranged at the time and have since been divorced. Skelton, 39, is currently incarcerated at the Chippewa Correctional Facility in the eastern Upper Peninsula. Police continue to investigate the boys’ disappearance as a homicide. They have asked that people be observant for anything unusual as they venture out into the woods and fields and to report anything suspicious they might find to the Morenci police at 458-7104. Herrera said the event’s program includes Morenci Mayor Keith Pennington giving an update on the reward fund, an update on the investigation from Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks, music, a tribute to the boys from their cousin Ashlyn Timberman, a video about the boys made by Zuvers, the introduction of a website and prayers. Herrera said people are asked to bring flashlights instead of candles. Copyright 2011 The Daily Telegram. Some rights reserved |

Box of bones containing missing children’s remains found in Montana home BY MEGAN CERULLO NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Friday, December 15, 2017, 12:12 PM Authorities uncovered a box of bones and teeth that are believed to be from three brothers who vanished from a small town in Michigan in 2010. A cleaning crew came upon the box of remains in the shed of a Missoula, Mont., home after its former tenant was evicted from the property in late September, NBC Montana reported. Loose teeth, bone from a lower jaw, as well as rocks were found in the box, Missoula City Police information officer Travis Welsh said. Police said the Montana State Crime Lab verified the remains as human. An anthropology professor at the University of Montana determined that they were “likely modern” and belonged to children ages 2-4, 5-8 and 6-10 years old at the time of their deaths, according to the report. The ages match those of Alexander, Andrew and Tanner Skelton — three brothers who disappeared from Morenci, Mich., in 2010, KRTV reported. Andrew, Alex and Tanner Skelton disappeared in 2010. A box of bones found in Missoula, Mont., contains the remains of children believed to be the same age as the boys when they disappeared. (REGINA H. BOONE/AP) The boys' father, John Skelton, pleaded no contest to three counts of unlawful imprisonment in September 2011. He claims he gave the boys to unknown individuals in order to keep them out of harm's way, alleging their mother, Tanya Skelton, was abusive — a claim she denied. However no suspect has been identified, and the kids’ identities have not been confirmed by police, NBC Montana reports. Missoula police are investigating the case along with the National Center for Missing and Endangered Children. Area residents say they were suspicious of the home that housed the bones. One man who lives nearby said he once went to a garage sale at his neighbor’s house. “The tenants were dirty; it was an unkempt house,” a man named Lennie told NBC Montana. “The yard was a mess, and they seemed really withdrawn like when you try to carry on a conversation with them about the garage sale stuff,” he said. “It’s just too bizarre and has us scared. If we could leave tomorrow we would,” he told NBC Montana. |

February 12, 2018, 12:07 PM Remains of three children found in shed not a match for missing Mich. brothers Century-old remains were found last year in a Missoula, Mo. shed KPAX Share Tweet Reddit Flipboard Email MISSOULA, Mont. - Facial bone fragments and teeth of three children found in a Montana shed last fall are more than 99 years old, ruling out any connection to recent missing children's cases, officials said Friday. Forensic scientists believe the youngest child to be Native American. SKELTON_BOYS.jpg A comparison of dental records determined the remains found in Missoula last September could not be those of three brothers who went missing in Michigan in 2010, Missoula County Chief Deputy Coroner Jace Dicken said. John Skelton of Michigan said earlier this week that the remains were not those of his boys. He was interviewed by WDIV-TV at a Michigan prison where he is serving 10 to 15 years for unlawful imprisonment. Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton were 9, 7 and 5 when their father failed to return them to his estranged wife on Thanksgiving 2010. John Skelton has said he gave the boys to a group to protect them from their mother. Tests done at the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification determined the remains were those of an American Indian child between 2 and 5, and two others between 5 and 9. Tests indicated the remains had likely been buried and later unearthed. KPAX.com | Continuous News | Missoula & Western Montana "Given the limited amount of bone specimens recovered and submitted to the lab, additional information confirming the sex, stature or ancestry of the three remains is inconclusive," Dicken said in a statement. The Texas lab will do DNA testing later this year to confirm the remains do not belong to any known missing children. The results may be available in six to eight months. |
