Valdosta Police continue searching for human remains

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) –Valdosta police are still searching for possible human remains around a condemned house.

Detectives dug and sifted through dirt today in an area where cadaver dogs picked up a scent.

They did find a bone fragment but a Valdosta State University anthropologist says it does not appear to be human.

Thursday Construction crews demolished concrete after getting a tip that a body could be buried there on Mills Street.

Police say a woman disappeared there 21 years ago.

"The dog team that came helped us from South Georgia Search and Rescue indicated that even over a long period of time if this woman was in fact killed in 1989, if her remains are here more than likely it cold be just bones left that the dogs should be able to detect," said Valdosta Police Cmdr. Brian Childress.

The VSU archeology department brought out its ground sonar.

It detected something underground.

They told police it could be a false positive but it indicated where police should focus their search.

Valdosta Investigating Claims of Body 11-18

UPDATE 11/19 at 5:32 p.m. --

Investigators found a bone while searching for the remains of a missing Valdosta woman last seen 21-years-ago.

Just after noon Friday, Valdosta police requested an anthropologist to determine whether the bone is from a human.

Cadaver dogs sniffed around this Mill Street lot Thursday, alerting police to focus their excavation here.

But they say these special canines also return false-positives, meaning they may smell methane from a decomposed animal or nearby sewer line, too.

The bone was found while officers were digging two-feet into the ground.

"We have located a bone, a partial bone anyway," said Childress. "We had some expert, an anthropologist come out and take a look at the bone. The initial indication is this bone is not human."

Police say the bone will be analyzed further.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Around 3 p.m. Wednesday, police say three people told construction workers demolishing an abandoned house that a woman's body is buried underneath it, according to Commander Brian Childress, with the Valdosta Police Department.

That lead officers to re-open a 1989 missing persons case, in which a woman was last seen at her boyfriend's home here.

Since about 9 a.m. Thursday, police have been excavating both this property and Veolia landfill for human remains.

"At this point, I don't have a dead body, or any remains of a human being," said Childress, with the Valdosta Police Department. "But in an effort to be thorough, we have detectives behind me. What they're doing now is combing through the debris."

Police say there's no evidence indicating the missing woman is dead.

They're questioning friends and family for clues, some of whom live in towns north of Valdosta.

Officers are determined to unravel these allegations.

They will continue investigating the scene until a conclusive report is reached.

We will bring you more details as they become available.

UPDATE: Cadaver dogs alert on demolition site
Search continues for possible body
Dean Poling The Valdosta Daily Times
Thu Nov 18, 2010, 07:28 PM EST

VALDOSTA — Cadaver dogs alerted this afternoon on an area that may contain human remains, said Valdosta Police Chief Frank Simons.

Trained to detect the odor of decaying human remains, the dogs repeatedly alerted on a spot at a demolition site turned crime scene today.

This does not confirm a body at the site, but police are now treating the area as carefully as an archaeological dig, Simons said.

Valdosta police have been searching this afternoon for a possible body on the site of a demolished house at the corner of Mills and Clark streets off River Street.

Valdosta Police Cmdr. Brian Childress said authorities can neither confirm nor deny if a body is located on the property. But police are taking every precaution to determine if a body is on the site.

The case started Wednesday afternoon when a demolition crew arrived to demolish a condemned house in the neighborhood. As the crew tore down the house, a few passersby raised the possibility that a body was buried or hidden somewhere on the property.

Police halted the construction. Searching past files, VPD investigators discovered that a missing woman had last been seen on the property in 1989. Contacting her relatives, they have not heard from her since she disappeared in 1989, Childress said.

Police obtained a search warrant for the property last night and began the intensive investigation this morning. Sonar equipment and cadaver dogs are being used at the Mill-Clark site. Investigators are sifting through debris that had already been transported to the landfill prior to work being halted in the demolition.

Valdosta, Georgia --

On November 17, 2010, a local construction company began to demolish a condemned, unoccupied dwelling at the corner of Mills Street and Clark Street. Two citizens came by the area and made the statement that they might “find a body under the concrete there”. The construction company personnel immediately notified the Valdosta Police Department.

Research was done on the area and it was discovered that a female was reported missing from the area over 21 years ago. She previously resided in the 200 block of Cherry Street when she was reported missing by her mother. The female was acquainted with the male who resided at the house located at Mills Street and Clark Street. They were reportedly boyfriend and girlfriend who had previously had domestic issues.

At this time there is no evidence to show that the female is deceased, and she is still considered a missing person.

As of November 18, 2010, Valdosta Police Department detectives received a search warrant for the property and are searching for any evidence of the missing person at this location. Valdosta State University Police is assisting VPD with the search and excavation. At this time, no evidence of human remains has been located.

The former resident has been located and is living in a town north of Valdosta, Georgia. He is cooperating with authorities. Names of the victim and former resident of the house are being withheld at this.

Police search condemned house for body
Posted: Nov 18, 2010 5:45 PM EST Updated: Nov 21, 2010 5:38 PM EST
By Jade Bulecza

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) –Valdosta Police are searching a condemned house for a body.

Construction crews were doing demolition work Wednesday when two people walked up and told them they suspected a body could be buried under concrete.

Police haven't found any evidence but they tell us a woman was last seen in that neighorhood 21 years ago.

Police are investigating the possibility that underneath this demolished concrete could be a woman's remains.

"We have detectives who are here observing to see if they find anything suspicious," said Valdosta Police Capt. Bobbi McGraw. "They're also sifting and digging through themselves."

Construction crews were out Wednesday demolishing the property of this condemned home when people walked up and told them a body could be buried here.

Police took that tip seriously because they tell us a 28-year old woman who was last seen May 4, 1989 lived in this neighborhood on Cherry Street.

Her mother reported her missing a few weeks later. The woman's boyfriend lived here at this home at the time. Police won't tell us his name either but they have been talking with him.

"They're were domestic disputes between them," said Capt. McGraw. "They had issues."

Neighbors have been watching the whole thing.

"That's crazy," said Antoine Loveday.

So far police haven't found any kind of evidence or remains.

Debris is being dropped off at the Veolia Landfill so detectives can sift through it.

Cadavers dogs are also being used in the search.
