http://www.kxly.com/news/25571721/detail.html Search Suspended For Missing Hiker Sally Showman | KXLY4 Reporter Posted: 5:30 pm PDT October 29, 2010 Updated: 5:49 pm PDT October 29, 2010 PRIEST LAKE, Idaho -- A North Idaho family may not know the fate of their father and brother until next summer after search and rescue crews suspended the search for 56-year-old David Uhl until next July. A Department of Lands employee first noticed David Uhl's truck at a trailhead three weeks ago. This past Tuesday the same employee noticed the truck hadn’t moved so he notified the sheriff. That same day his family filed a missing persons report. On Friday searchers canvassed the mountains northeast of Priest Lake where Uhl's abandoned truck was found. A North Idaho family may not know the fate of their father and brother until next summer after search and rescue crews suspended the search for 56-year-old David Uhl until next July. KXLY4's Sally Showman reports. “We would like to find him alive but the chances are very slim for that,” Mike Neilsen with Priest Lake Search and Rescue said. “It’s not odd for him to take off and do his own thing so we didn’t think anything of it at first,” David’s son Jonathon said. However after a month without any word from his dad Jonathon Uhl began to panic, especially after his dad’s truck was found abandoned. Jonathon had to see the truck himself to believe it. “His cup of coffee sitting there half drank, that hits hard, that’s his favorite coffee cup,” Jonathon said. “We're doing this for the family, we want to try to bring closure for them if we can, we're putting an all out effort,” Mike Neilsen said. That all out effort so far has turned up no signs of David Uhl. “They're doing as much as they can for what’s safe for them. It’s cold and snowy and crappy. The higher up you get, the worse it is,” Jonathon said. Priest Lake Search and Rescue workers returned with no answers for David's family. They left knowing the snowy conditions won't permit their return until next July. It was another hard mission for these rescuers who've seen more death in the last year than anyone should in a lifetime. “This year we've had several searches but not found anyone alive,” Neilsen. As for David Uhl’s family the excruciating pain of the unknown continues. “It’s rough but you gotta stay positive and hope for the best, it’s all you can do,” Jonathon said. |

Family members hold out hope for missing man Posted: Friday, November 12, 2010 9:19 am By WILLIAM LEWIS Family members of David Uhl are still awaiting his safe return after a month without a clue to the long-time Silver Valley community member's whereabouts. A Department of Transportation employee first discovered Uhl's truck in the mountains northeast of Priest Lake around the first week of October and notified the local authorities three weeks later on Tuesday, Oct. 28 that the truck was still there. That same day Uhl's family filed a missing persons report, but Bonner and Boundary county sheriff's offices called off search and rescue teams on Oct. 29 because of snow-packed mountains in rugged terrain that prevented search dogs from finding traces of Uhl's possible trajectory. Uhl's sister, Cataldo resident Kathy McPherson, described her brother as a loner and said that it wasn't unusual for Uhl to be gone for weeks at a time without notifying family members. "We didn't think it was unusual for him to be gone for a little while. This summer, he took a trip to California and was gone for a couple of weeks, so two weeks wouldn't have been unusual," she said. "He would always take off on his Harley - that's why his son Jonathan, who is really close to David, didn't make much of it at first because he was always taking off," added Uhl's older sister, Diana Witherspoon, who lives in Post Falls. "It was only when the truck was found and the weeks began to pass that we realized he was probably not off on an adventure." The family, including son Jonathan, his fiancée, Alicia, Kathy and Diana urgently conducted their own searches for David on Thursday Oct. 28, the day before the search and rescue operation and once again on Saturday after authorities gave up the search until summer. "We went the first time, and took a four-wheeler to where the truck was located at the trailhead of the mountains. The second time we wanted to go up and see what they had missed and see if there was anything that we might have missed as far as clues or notes that might have been missed - anything that might have been left behind in the tracks," Witherspoon said. "We were better equipped the second time, because the first time we had a Jeep and a four-wheeler and second time we had our Dodge pick-up which is a four-wheel drive. We thought about getting the truck out of the woods - but that was impractical due to the amount of snow." Witherspoon said that while she is eager to see her brother return to the area safe, she understands why the search and rescue effort was called off until summertime, especially in the likelihood that Uhl went hiking. "The sheriffs were concerned about untrained people in the woods so they only wanted their trained persons up there in the mountain crest because somebody could fall through," she said. "You can always hope for a better outcome - that he got a ride with someone or got a cabin in the woods somewhere. That's what we are hoping for." http://www.shoshonenewspress.com/news/arti...1cc4c002e0.html |
