http://www.shelteroffshore.com/index.php/l...-can-help-10892 Australian Expatriate Missing in Canada – You Can Help Owen Kiernan Rooney is a 24-year-old Australian expatriate missing in Canada since August – please look at his picture and spread the word about this young man and help us find him and bring him home to his family Owen Kiernan Rooney is a 24-year-old Australian expatriate who has gone missing in Canada: we are supporting his family and the police as they work hard to find him and bring him home. You can help us by getting involved in spreading the message about this young man’s disappearance. Owen was working and travelling around Canada with his sisters Bree and Kelly Rooney when he went missing on August the 14th. He hasn’t been seen or heard from since, he hasn’t even accessed his credit cards, his bank accounts or his internet accounts such as his Facebook page. Owen Rooney was assaulted prior to his disappearance and admitted himself to hospital on the 13th of August – however on the 14th of August he walked out of Grand Forks hospital in British Columbia, leaving without his belongings, and he has not been seen or heard from since. Concern for this young man is currently running very high – and we are urging all our readers, no matter where they are in the world, to get involved in the search for Owen. Owen, Kelly and Bree Rooney are close siblings from a loving and close-knit family. When Owen went missing his parents flew to Canada from Australia and together the family are doing everything they can to raise the profile of this missing person story. Kelly contacted us at Shelter Offshore and asked us to get involved – and we are doing that in the best way we know how. I.e., by releasing this story and asking all of our excellent loyal readers to get involved with the search for Owen Kiernan Rooney… Could it be that Owen lost his memory or his direction after the assault that left him hospitalised? Could he be wandering around Canada, sleeping rough? Has he lost his way – is he travelling under an assumed name? The details you need to know about the story so that you can pass them on to everyone you know, post them on your own websites, blogs and social networking pages are as follows: - Owen Kiernan Rooney is 24 years old. He is an Australian citizen. He is 175cm tall (that’s 5 foot 9 inches), he weighs about 73 kg (which is 161 pounds or 11 stone 7 pounds). He has brown hair and two distinctive tattoos - one is on his shoulder, it’s about 3 inches across and is a circle shaped Celtic star. The other on his calve is a triangle with a kangaroo on it. The background to Owen’s disappearance could possibly suggest this young man is disorientated and lost and that you can help find him and bring him home to his loving family. It is known that Owen attended the Shambalah Music Festival which took place between the 6th and the 9th of August 2010 and which is located on the Salmo River Ranch in Salmo, British Columbia in Canada. He was was making his way back to Kelowna where he had been living for the summer and where he was working. It’s known that he got a lift from Castlegar to Christina Lake but it is still not known who the lift was with – anyone who has any information or who saw Owen is asked to please come forward, you may know something of great importance without even realising it. Owen was assaulted in Christina Lake and he admitted himself to Grand Forks Hospital in British Columbia as a result on the 13th of August. Owen stayed in hospital overnight but left the hospital next evening - he left without taking his belongings, he did not return and he has not been seen since. His family are working with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to find Owen and so far they are still trying to piece together what occurred during the time before Owen disappeared – and they have discovered absolutely nothing about what happened to Owen after he left the hospital. Can you help? As mentioned, Owen has not accessed his credit cards, bank accounts or internet accounts including his Facebook. It is NOT NORMAL for Owen to be out of contact with his family for so long and so of course everyone is extremely worried for Owen. It could be that he no longer knows who he is as a result of the assault for example – and so please, please, take a look at his picture, post it on your website or your blog, tell all your friends and fellow expats about Owen and help us all to find him and bring him safely home to his loving family. Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Owen Kiernan Rooney are asked to contact the Grand Forks RCMP on 250-442-8288, their local police services or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 - alternatively you can contact the Royal Canadian Mounted Police via their website. |

Search for missing Aussie backpacker in Canada Emily Laurence reported this story on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 08:10:00 TONY EASTLEY: Canadian police are still searching for an Australian man who hasn't been seen since he checked himself out of a hospital in British Colombia in August this year. But details surrounding the circumstances leading up to the disappearance of 24-year-old Owen Kiernan Rooney from New South Wales are becoming clearer. Inquiries by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and his family have revealed he was suffering from drug induced paranoia after attending a music festival. Emily Laurence with this report. EMILY LAURENCE: Owen Rooney is from Milton on the south coast of New South Wales but like many young Australians, he's travelled to Canada to work during the snow season. For the past two years he's been at the Big White resort at Kelowna north-east of Vancouver. The 24-year-old stayed on this summer and headed to the Shambhala Music Festival in British Columbia's south east in August. His mother, Sharon Rooney, says her son's friends have told her he took a hallucinogenic drug, spent the last two days of the event at a medical tent and missed his ride home. SHARRON ROONEY: Apparently Owen had taken mushrooms and they really didn't agree with him, put him into a state of paranoia and confusion and that lasted right up until when he was assaulted at Christina Lake which is about four or five days later. EMILY LAURENCE: In a confused and disoriented state, she says he was assaulted after he trespassed on a private property, suffering bruising to his face and temples and bleeding from the ears. Police believe he was looking for friends and didn't know where he was. From there he caught a bus to a hospital at the nearby town of Grand Forks. Mrs Rooney says she believes the hospital didn't fully monitor her son or realise his state of mind. SHARON ROONEY: He was virtually left to his own devices and at tea time they noticed that he was eating his dinner outside, and by seven o'clock they noticed that he wasn't there. EMILY LAURENCE: Despite a number searches and an extensive media campaign there's no clue as to where he's gone. SHARRON ROONEY: He left behind his full back pack, his jumper, sunglasses, cell phone, so he walked out of there with virtually nothing, maybe he had his wallet, we're not sure. EMILY LAURENCE: Royal Canadian Mounted Police Corporal, Dan Moskaluk, says rescue teams and community volunteers from Grand Forks have been helping in the search. DAN MOSKALUK: There has been aerial searches of some of the area rivers and river edges for any sign and again this yielded negative results. EMILY LAURENCE: He says the police don't suspect Owen Rooney met with foul play but believe he may have tried to head back to Kelowna. DAN MOSKALUK: His family essentially had him relaying that information that he was headed home after this weekend, but he vanished essentially when he left the hospital grounds. EMILY LAURENCE: There's one theory, that he started a 300 kilometre walking trail through the forest back home. But seasonal hunters have found no evidence of anyone in the wilderness. Meanwhile Mrs Rooney, her husband and two daughters are in Canada doorknocking and distributing leaflets. They're hoping someone is looking after their son and brother. SHARON ROONEY: Owen comes from a very strong loving family. He doesn't have any mental issues, up until now, in the normal circumstances he wouldn't not contact us. He was bodily healthy, very healthy young man, when he walked out of that hospital, but mentally we don't know. EMILY LAURENCE: The family are encouraging anyone in Australia with contacts in Canada to distribute a Facebook page 'Help Find Owen Rooney'. Police will this week film a re-enactment of the events leading up to of his disappearance before posting the video on YouTube. TONY EASTLEY: Emily Laurence reporting. http://www.abc.net.au/am/content/2010/s304...?site=illawarra |

Missing Australian man Owen Rooney spotted on Vancouver Island Staff writers From: News.com.au November 27, 2010 5:37PM Sydney man Owen Rooney has been spotted selling dream catchers on Vancouver Island. Source: The Daily Telegraph MORE than three months after vanishing from a hospital in Canada with no money or identification, missing Australian Owen Rooney was reportedly spotted selling dream catchers on Vancouver Island. The 24-year-old was on a working holiday with his two sisters when he walked away from a hospital in Grand Forks on August 14, CTV said today. Police said there had been four credible sightings of the traveller dating back to the beginning of the month, and in three of those cases the man had been trying to sell homemade dream catchers door-to-door. Mr Rooney's parents abandoned their businesses in Australia and went to Canada in August in the hope of finding their missing son. His mother Sharon told the ABC in October that prior to his disappearance Mr Rooney, from Milton on the south coast of New South Wales, took some mushrooms at a music festival in British Columbia and "they really didn't agree with him". http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/world/mis...from=public_rss |

http://www.find-owen.com/ We are the Rooney family from Australia and are desperately searching for our son Owen, who walked away from the hospital and his belongings in Grand Forks, BC, on August 14, 2010. He has not been heard from since. It is extremely unusual for him to not be in contact with friends and family. He had sustained a head injury on Aug 12. He is 5'9" tall, 160 lb, has an Australian accent and was last seen wearing a dark shirt and shorts. He has tattoos on his right calf and on his shoulder (see pictures below, right). He worked at Big White in Kelowna for the past two winters and at a restaurant in Kelowna until his disappearance. We are asking for your help and are most appreciative of any help you can give us. If you can print out posters and put them up, that would help a LOT (click here for PDF of poster, or visit this site and right click to print). Rooney family comes to Calgary to search for OwenWith files from the Calgary Herald, Global News: Wednesday, January 5, 2011 RELATEDThe family of missing Australian Owen Rooney gather together in a Calgary apartment to discuss plans... Police say there has been a sighting of a man matching the description of Owen Rooney, 24, in Nanaimo. Missing Australian spotted on Island selling dreamcatchersCalgarians are being asked to look out for a missing Australian man who disappeared almost five months ago in B.C. Owen Rooney, 24, spent the summer in Kelowna, B.C., after working the previous winter at Big White Ski resort. But days after attending the Shambalah Music Festival in Salmo, he disappeared. His family fears he got into trouble after experimenting with hallucinogenic mushrooms. Rooney drifted to Nelson and Castlegar, then hitched a ride on Aug. 12 to Christina Lake. There, he was the victim of a serious beating, his parents say. He was picked up the next morning by police, who took him to the Grand Forks bus station after he refused to go to the hospital. However, Rooney got off the bus, cashed in his ticket and went to the hospital, where he stayed overnight with two black eyes and head trauma. Owen was last seen on August 14th at the hospital in Grand Forks. It is believed he walked out of hospital leaving his belongings behind, wearing just a t-shirt and shorts. Rooney’s entire family have arrived in Calgary to continue the search for him. They believe Owen may be suffering from brain injury. “He hasn’t contacted us for his father’s birthday or Christmas or New Years,” says Sharon Rooney, Owens mother. “That is just so unusual. It is very unusual so he must be disconnected from who he is.” After arriving in Calgary a week ago, the Rooney’s have found a temporary home and search headquarters in an apartment. They spent much of Tuesday visiting sites downtown, including hotels and tourist areas and met with Calgary RCMP. Dozens of tips have been passed along, including one that Owen may have been in Northern Alberta travelling with a group selling dream catchers. The family now thinks that group could be selling them in Calgary or Edmonton. They haven’t been able to build upon the lead yet, but are staying optimistic. “A lady today called and said she believes she was on a bus with him,” says Kelly, Owens sister. “It’s been five months; you can’t mope around for five months. And to be active on it is the strength.” The family plans on touring the entire province and if more leads come in, they will follow up on them. If not, they may head east. One thing they know for certain – they won’t go back to Australia until they know what happened to Owen. The family has set up a Facebook page called “Help find Owen Rooney” as well as a website – www.find-owen.com. http://www.globaltvcalgary.com/Rooney+fami...3883/story.html |

http://www.castanet.net/news/Kelowna/60156...ng-for-6-months Kelowna resident missing for 6 months by RCMP - Story: 60156 Feb 14, 2011 / 2:30 pm Six months after his disappearance, Owen Rooney's family has still not given up hope, despite all plausible leads being exhausted. Rooney, an Australian native living in Kelowna, was last seen at the Grand Forks Hospital on August 14, 2010 at approximately 8:00 p.m., sitting just outside the hospital on a picnic table. He left the hospital alone leaving behind all his belongings and has not been seen since. Despite the negative results, mother Sharron Rooney says she wants to thank all communities in B.C. and Alberta they have passed through in search of their son. "The support from Canadians in B.C. and Alberta has been overwhelming and very much appreciated, people have been posting photos and posters for us and sharing it on social media as well," says Rooney. The Rooney family travelled from Australia to aid in the search, and will be returning home soon. But they hope their 24-year-old family member will be found before they leave. "We would like to encourage everyone to go to our website to obtain Owen's photo to post on bulletin boards in public locations or online." Anyone with information regarding Owen’s whereabouts or any details on his disappearance, however insignificant the information may be, are asked to contact the Grand Forks RCMP at 250-442-8288, their local police service, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or through the website that the family have set up. Owen is 5'9" 175 cm in height and is 161 lbs or 73 kg. He has blue eyes, short brown hair and has two tattoos, one is on his left shoulder blade about 3 inches across of a circle with a Celtic star around it. The other tattoo is on his right calf, a logo of a triangle with a kangaroo inside and the words 'Australian Made' underneath. This calf tattoo is about the size of the bottom of a coffee mug. |

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/02...?section=justin Family may abandon search for missing Aussie Posted 9 hours 32 minutes ago The family of an Australian man missing in Canada for more than six months are considering abandoning their search. Owen Rooney walked out of a British Columbia hospital last August and has not been seen since. The 24-year-old ski-season worker was being treated for injuries suffered in an assault and was hallucinating after taking drugs. His parents and sisters from the New South Wales south coast have been in Canada searching for him ever since. His mother, Sharron Rooney, says they are deciding whether to return home. "Financially we can't stay here forever and it's a huge decision to make, to leave here will be very, very hard without Owen," she said. The family believes he is still alive, but that hallucinogenic drugs taken at a music festival before he went missing may be affecting his state of mind. There have been no confirmed sightings of Mr Rooney since he disappeared. But Ms Rooney says they have not lost hope. "There's been ground searches and there's been helicopter searches and there's been information that he may be here, there or somewhere else," she said. "It's sort of maybe a little bit harsh to say, but usually a body turns up, and one hasn't." Tags: community-and-society, missing-person, australia, nsw, canada |

Source: The Daily Telegraph THE family of a Sydney man who vanished from a Canadian hospital more than one month ago are at a loss to explain his disappearance. There has been no trace of 24-year-old Sydney electrician Owen Rooney since he disappeared from the Boundary Hospital in Grand Forks, Canada, on August 14, where he was being treated for facial bruising. His 22-year-old sister Bree said they were at a loss to explain how Owen, "who had never been in a fight in his life", came to have two black eyes. Owen had been on a working holiday in Canada with Bree and their sister Kelly when he disappeared.l The siblings were due to return to Ulladulla, on the South Coast , in October. Parents Sharon and Steve have joined the search for Owen. "We haven't heard anything. My parents are here now. We'll stay until we find him," Bree said. Start of sidebar. He disappeared before he was formally discharged and left his backpack behind. His passport was left behind in his apartment. Owen's bank accounts and credit cards have not been touched nor has there been any activity on his Facebook page. Owen had worked over the Canadian winter with his sisters at the Big White ski resort. At the end of the season the siblings had parted ways, with Owen deciding to stay in the area and work at a local restaurant while his sisters travelled to Vancouver. Owen had been to the Shambhala Music Festival and was hitching 400km back to Kelowna when he was given a ride by a police officer. The police officer has told authorities Owen appeared unwell and had bruises on his face so he had advised him to go to hospital. The police officer had dropped Owen at the Grand Forks bus depot. Owen made it to the hospital but has not been seen since. His family are handing out missing person leaflets and plastering towns between Grand Forks and Kelowna with missing person posters. "We don't know what has happened to him," Bree said. "Anything I said would just be speculation. It's a police matter." "We're just appealing to anyone who has seen Owen or been in contact with him to get in touch with us." |

Search for Owen Rooney gains momentum with reported sightings by Boundary Sentinel on 26 Nov 2010 in CrimeGeneralRegional Share Owen Rooney has been missing since Aug. 14The search for missing Australian man, Owen Rooney, has been extended to Vancouver Island after possible sightings. One incident in Nanaimo occurred on Nov. 5 but was not reported to police until one week later. The adult female caller told police she saw a news report that same night and decided after watching it that one of the three bore a resemblance to Rooney, 24-years-old and last seen in Grand Forks on Aug. 14. The possible sighting involved a group of three males, all in their early twenties, going door to door in the north end of Nanaimo attempting to sell dream catchers. The caller never spoke with the male who resembled Rooney. He was standing off to the side but she said that she did get a good look at him. The male spoken to at the caller’s door had a Jamaican accent and was wearing his hair in dreadlocks. “There were no other reports received of these males going door to door and investigators in Grand Forks have advised that the majority of sightings were reported in the Cranbrook and Kimberly area. Having said that, we felt it would be prudent at this time to post Mr. Rooney’s picture in the possibility he has made his way to the Island ,” said Constable Gary O’Brien, media spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP. According to a CBC report today, Saanich police now say people in Parksville, Nanaimo and Saanich have all reported seeing Rooney earlier this month. In at least two of the sightings, Rooney was seen selling dream-catchers door-to-door with other men. The CBC reported that Sgt. Dean Jantzen said the Saanich sighting is credible because the person reported having direct contact with Rooney. Jantzen asks anyone who sees Rooney to call 911 immediately. Rooney’s parents flew to Canada from their home in Australia to spearhead the search for their missing son along with their two daughters. After spending months in the Grand Forks area, they moved their search to Vancouver because of reports of sightings there. Rooney, shown in the attached photo is 5 foot 9 inches, 160 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250–754-2345 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-22-8477 or go online to www.nanaimocrimestoppers.ca http://boundarysentinel.com/news/general/s...-sightings-8492 |

A heartsick Australian family is pleading for the public’s help in finding their son Owen Kiernan Rooney, who disappeared from Grand Forks one year ago. Rooney’s mother, Sharron Rooney, said Monday that Owen was suffering from mental trauma when he vanished outside Grand Forks Hospital on Aug. 14, 2010. “We are unsure of his mental capabilities,” said Sharron Rooney, whose family has devoted their time and life savings in efforts to assist the search. Owen’s dad Steve Rooney said in an RCMP news release that any information would be appreciated. “We are pleading with the public to come forward with any information they might have,” he said. Rooney, 24, was in Canada on an electrician’s work visa when he became involved in an odd chain of circumstances beginning at the Shambhala Music Festival near Salmo, which was held on Aug. 3-8, 2010. RCMP Cpl. Richard Lanz said police were notified a man was “acting suspiciously” at Christina Lake. “It appears he had been in a fight,” said Lanz. Rooney was taken to Grand Forks, where he initially refused medical treatment but then went to hospital. His backpack and personal belongings were left behind when he was last seen on Aug. 14, but his wallet and ID were gone. “Owen would have been in some disarray to walk out of a hospital without his belongings,” said Sharron Rooney. The young man had planned to spend the summer in Kelowna. He is described as five-foot-nine and 160 pounds with short brown hair. Information can be given to Grand Forks RCMP at 250-442-8288 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Owen’s two sisters remain in the country assisting the search, while his parents have returned to Australia. kspencer@theprovince.com Read more: http://www.theprovince.com/year+later+fami...l#ixzz1VORuzEeY http://www.theprovince.com/news/bc/year+la...8001/story.html |
