April 29, 2016 An age-enhanced image to be created; Adam Emery last seen in 1993. By Katie Mulvaney Journal Staff Writer PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Rhode Island State Police are working with the FBI to create an age-enhanced image of Adam C. Emery, a Warwick man who disappeared in 1993, five hours after being convicted of second-degree murder for stabbing a man in a road-rage incident. State Police Col. Steven G. O'Donnell said Friday that he had reached out to the FBI about generating a digitally enhanced photo, much like the one that ultimately snared mobster James "Whitey" Bulger. Emery would now be 54. "The possibility exists that he's still out there," O'Donnell said. "There was a lot of suspicion he was going to flee with his wife." There's still a warrant out for Emery's arrest and he remains on the FBI's most wanted list, with indication that he might have traveled to Florida or Italy. O'Donnell said he had read the case file and was struck by representations by Emery's family that the then 31-year-old was a narcissist who would never kill himself. Emery vanished with his wife, Elena, Nov. 10, 1993, the same day a jury pronounced him guilty of murder for stabbing 20-year-old Jason K. Bass to death after mistaking Bass as the driver of the car that sideswiped his as he and his wife ate chowder and clam cakes. Emery stabbed Bass through the heart with a double-edged military knife after a 1.7-mile car chase. Paint scrapings would later prove that the car that had hit the Emerys' Thunderbird did not belong to Bass. At his trial, Emery claimed the killing was in self-defense. Hours after the verdict, Adam, who was out on bail awaiting sentencing, and Elena's Toyota Camry was found abandoned on the Claiborne Pell Bridge. It was discovered that the couple bought 80 pounds of weights, black hooded sweatsuits and two pairs of white socks. A fisherman dredged up a skull identified as Elena's 10 months later, but Adam's remains have never been found. He had studied Italian while awaiting trial in the ACI. O'Donnell said he had spoken with Bass' family in the last few weeks and was moved by the impact the lack of closure was wreaking on them. "For 25 years, there's no closure," he said. "It was very valuable to listen to the family about how that pain never goes away. It kind of made us look at cold cases from a different perspective." http://www.providencejournal.com/news/2016...victed-murderer |
