http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stor...1E?OpenDocument Husband remains hopeful that missing wife will be found Margaret Ann Unger, 65, missing from Franklin county. (Handout) By Patrick M. O'Connell ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 04/28/2010 ST. CLAIR — The husband of a missing Franklin County woman is not giving up hope that his wife will be found safe, even after more than a week in the woods. Margaret Unger, 64, has not been seen since April 19, when she walked away from her home in a remote area near St. Clair. "I don't want anyone to give up on Margaret," Ray Unger said Tuesday. "Because I know she's out there and she's going to be found. She's going to be OK." Margaret Unger suffers from schizophrenia and had recently stopped taking her medication because she was convinced it was contributing to her heart condition. That led to erratic behavior, her husband said. When she disappeared into the woods, she was barefoot and wearing a light blue shirt and khaki shorts. Ray Unger said he tried to follow Margaret, but lost track of her in the heavy underbrush and wooded, hilly terrain that surrounds their home on Turkey Run Road. He then searched by car to see if his wife had walked to a nearby main road, but he did not see her and she had not returned home, so he contacted the Sheriff's Department. Since then, sheriff's deputies, firefighters, search dogs and a police helicopter have joined Unger's family, friends and area residents in the search. Ray Unger and Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke are hopeful Margaret has sought refuge in some of the area's cabins, barns or sheds. "We've still got our hopes up," Toelke said, although he acknowledged the search may be a recovery mission at this point, especially because the area is also home to mine shafts and caves. Ray and Margaret Unger have been married for 43 years, and the couple enjoy spending time camping and attending church. One of their favorite activities is grabbing an ice cream cone and going for a walk at Meramec Caverns. "She's a child of God," Ray Unger said. "And God's looking over her. He's going to take care of her." Anyone with information about the case should call the Franklin County sheriff's office at 636-583-2560.
