Police find missing man's car
Last Updated: Monday, March 8, 2010 | 6:22 PM AT

Police say they've located a car belonging to a 30-year-old Woodstock, N.B., man who's been missing for two weeks.

Gregory David Wry was last seen leaving Fredericton's Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel on Prospect Street on Feb. 21.

Two men who were out walking on Saturday afternoon found Wry's beige 2005 Chevrolet Malibu, according to Carleton York District 7 RCMP.

The car was parked in a clear-cut area on an unserviced road near Pokiok, which was not plowed, said Sgt. Dave Vautour.

Police are now dusting the vehicle for fingerprints and searching for any other clues about his whereabouts.

An extensive search for Wry was held in the Allandale area, near Pokiok, over the weekend.

The two-day search involved the RCMP helicopter, police dog, and volunteers with the Carleton Ground Search Team, Vautour said.

"We have been looking for footprints, clothing, any articles that we could be able to identify as being part of Mr. Rye's possessions," RCMP Staff Sgt. Mitch MacMillan said at a news conference Monday. "That's one of the things that we would've been looking for and none of that was located."

Wry lived with his father, David Wry, and worked as a cleaner at the Atlantic Superstore.

Gregory Wry's sister Lori and her father David were at the news conference but said they were too emotional to speak.

Andrew Garnett, Lori Wry's husband, spoke for the family and called Gregory "a great guy."

"We care about him greatly," he said. "We just want to know that he's okay, and where he is."

Gregory Wry is 172 cms tall — or five-foot-eight-inches and weighs 63 kg or 140 lbs. He has brown hair worn brush-cut style, green eyes and scruffy facial hair.

Wry was last ween wearing a ball cap, a jacket with leather sleeves, jeans and sneakers.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the District 7 RCMP at 506-325-3000, or Woodstock police force at 506-325-4601.

Missing man's vehicle found

Stuck in snow | No tracks around vehicle found near Pokiok

Stumble Upondel.icio.usDiggFacebookPrintEmail2 Comment(s)The mystery of what happened to a Woodstock man missing since February continues to deepen.

District 7 RCMP announced Monday that a vehicle belonging to Greg Wry was located over the weekend in the Allandale area near Pokiok.

It was discovered Saturday by a couple who was out for a drive.

Despite an extensive search by the RCMP and the Carleton Ground Search Team no sign of the missing man was found.

The RCMP police dog and the force's helicopter searched the area for two days.

"There's no real evidence of foul play right now," said Sgt. Dave Vautour of District 7 RCMP.

Wry, 30, was last seen leaving Fredericton's Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel on Prospect Street on Feb. 22.

Wry's 2005 beige Chevrolet Malibu was found parked in a clear-cut area on an unserviced, unplowed roadway, approximately one kilometre from the Y intersection near Allandale.

The car was locked and everything inside was in order.

"There was nothing peculiar about the car, nothing suspicious about the car," Vautour said. "It was stuck, though."

There was no indication of footprints around the vehicle or any sign of a second vehicle.

"That's bothersome," Vautour said. "But depending on how long that vehicle would have been there, there could have been snow that came afterwards."

Vautour said it would be speculation to comment on what could have happened after the vehicle became stuck.

He said some people might say he walked back out on the road or walked deeper into the woods.

"Nobody would know; there is just no evidence there right now."

If Wry is lost in the woods, Vautour said, it's unclear whether his clothing is enough to keep him warm.

"He has been missing for two weeks now. We have had some cold weather during that period. Some of those nights were below zero."

An additional search is being organized and will likely happen this weekend.

Vautour said the RCMP will continue its investigation in conjunction with the Woodstock town police.

Deputy chief Keith Bull of the Woodstock Police Force said the department still considers the Wry case a missing person investigation.

Wry is about 5'8" tall and 140 pounds, and has brown hair worn brush-cut style, green eyes and scruffy facial hair. He was last seen wearing a ball cap, jacket with leather sleeves and brown cloth patches, jeans and sneakers.

Wry's father David Wry told The Daily Gleaner recently that it's out of character for his son not to be in touch with his family.

"If he had control of the situation, I think he would have called home," David Wry said.

Anyone with further information on Wry is asked to contact the Woodstock Police Force at 325-4601 or the District 7 RCMP at 325-3000.

The case of a Woodstock man missing since February will be featured in a new Crime Stoppers television spot this week.

Enlarge Photo SUBMITTED PHOTOCrime Stoppers will focus on the February disappearance of Gregory Wry in a television commercial set to air this week. Gregory David Wry, 30, was last seen at the Howard Johnson's Plaza Hotel in Fredericton on Feb. 21 and was reported missing Feb. 24.

Wry's vehicle, a sandy brown 2005 Chevrolet Malibu with New Brunswick licence plate GMS-732, was located on Allandale Road near Nackawic in early March by a group that was off-roading.

Police are hopeful the television spot will result in new leads in the case.

The Woodstock Police Force and District 7 RCMP have been working together on the case but have had little to go on since Wry disappeared.

Apart from the vehicle, search-and-rescue teams were unable to find any sign of Wry during their search in March.

At the time of his disappearance, Wry's father said he thought his son was going to Fredericton to complete a passport application.

"He had the application form and went to Wal-Mart to get the pictures taken and he got a guarantor and filled out one of them, and he thought it was going to happen overnight," David Wry said at the time.

"My guess is that when he left the house on Sunday (Feb. 21), maybe as an afterthought, he might of thought 'Why don't I go to Fredericton today and be there for the morning?' I'm speculating on that."

Members of Wry's family said they didn't think he had any acquaintances in Fredericton.

Wry apparently drove to Fredericton after working an overnight janitorial shift. He paid for his hotel room in cash but used his credit card for a security deposit.

His family found out about his Fredericton hotel stay when the hotel contacted them Feb. 22 about crediting Wry's credit card for the room deposit.

"They were calling to see if he was home so they could make arrangements to give him back his damage deposit," Wry's brother-in-law Andrew Garnett told a CanadaEast News reporter in March.

When police found Wry's car, they also found the passport application and photo on the seat, leading Garnett to suspect Wry never made it to the government office.

Wry is 5'8" and 140 pounds. He has brown hair worn brush-cut style at the time of his disappearance and had scruffy facial hair but not a full beard.

He has green eyes and he often wears a ball cap. He was last seen wearing a jacket with leather sleeves and brown cloth patches, jeans and sneakers.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Woodstock Police Force at 325-4601, District 7 RCMP at 325-2000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
