http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,587753,00.html Police Suspend Search for Hiker in Hawaii; Family Suspects 'Foul Play' Tuesday, March 02, 2010 By Joshua Rhett Miller The search for Laura Vogel, 43, has been suspended, police say, as relatives insist foul play led to the disappearance of the 43-year-old avid camper. Two digital-age forms of communication are the focus of a police investigation into the mysterious disappearance of a 43-year-old hiker in Hawaii who relatives believe was the victim of foul play. Maui police say the active search for 43-year-old Laura Vogel has been suspended until new evidence is found, but relatives believe "something went desperately wrong." Vogel, a freelance tutor and avid camper, was last heard from on Feb. 21 when she sent a text message to a friend indicating she was "meeting all the locals" in an area known as the birthing pools in Haiku, in Maui County. Vogel’s friends found her van near the Pauwela lighthouse on Feb. 22. Her keys were inside, which was not unusual, but her cell phone and wallet were missing, said Lt. John Jakubczak of the Maui Police Department. A day later, the back portion of a cell phone believed to be Vogel’s was found nearby. Tracking dogs hunted fruitlessly for four days along the coastline, and no evidence of foul play or signs of an accident were found during searches of areas that covered heavy vegetation and rocky cliffs. Now, Jakubczak said, search efforts will remain suspended until there is new information. “What we’re saying is, it’s very suspicious,” he said. “But again, we’re not listing it as foul play because there’s no evidence of foul play at this moment.” Jakubczak said two calls were made from Vogel’s phone on the night she vanished, including one to a number not previously called on that line. And, he said, the man to whom the number was registered had not been using the line for nearly 10 years. He said the unidentified man is a "person of interest" in the case. "[But] there’s nothing to say that this person was involved in this," Jakubczak told FoxNews.com. "There are other people who we are continuing to look at as people of interest." The missing woman's brother, Tim Vogel, of Jupiter, Fla., was among relatives who arrived in Maui to assist in search efforts. He told the Maui News that he’s pleased with the steps officials have taken, but Vogel still believes "foul play" led to the disappearance of his sister. "Something went desperately wrong," he told the newspaper. "This is not a camper who goes off into the woods and is missing. She is more experienced than most backpackers. She doesn’t just go missing. It’s under very suspicious terms, and we’re very concerned." He said friends began searching for his sister the day after she vanished, when she failed to show up for a tutoring appointment. “Her friends started calling because Laura always arrives,” he told The Maui News, “and she’s always on time.” A Facebook page dedicated to locating Vogel had more than 1,800 fans as of Tuesday morning, many of whom praised her passion for all things outdoors and for being an "independent and free" spirit. "She always had a smile on her face and a crazy scheme to keep us inspired, strong and alive," one message read. "Laura, I will never forget our backpacking and hiking adventures ... or the many other adventures you took us on." Vogel’s friends continued search efforts on Monday, according to another post, including patrols of "steep areas" by helicopter, rough waters by Jet Ski and cliffs via rappelling. "Others doggedly continue the arduous foot-searching in incredibl[y] rough terrain," the post read. "No new signs of Laura, but no one is giving up." Jessica Vogel said her sister-in-law worked for many years as a high school teacher in New Mexico and has a master’s degree in wildlife ecology. Relatives "pretty firmly" believe Vogel did not just disappear, she said. "We know that she was with people the night she disappeared and we have yet to hear from those people, which is extremely suspicious to us," Jessica Vogel said. "We’ve been searching and searching. If she had a hiking accident, we would’ve found her." Laura Vogel is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, roughly 140 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes. Anyone with information regarding her whereabouts is asked to call the Maui Police Department at (808) 244-6245.

http://www.kitv.com/news/22904636/detail.html Search For Missing Maui Woman Intensifies Laura Vogel's Family Hires Professional Search Company Jodi Leong KITV4 News Reporter POSTED: 4:34 pm HST March 21, 2010 UPDATED: 5:37 pm HST March 21, 2010 HONOLULU -- The family of a missing Maui woman has hired a Texas company to help in their search. RP Search Services used a drone aircraft Saturday, to take high resolution photos of the areas where Laura Vogel was last seen. “We use these high resolution images to analyze targets on the ground. If we see anything of interest on the ground, we’ll send in individuals to go and clear that target and determine if it’s relevant or not,” said Gene Robinson, of RP Search Services. The drone helped guide Sunday’s ground search for Vogel. “The family still believes that people still have information,” said Vogel’s brother Tim Vogel. “Whoever has information, please come forward.” Maui police said they questioned a person of interest in the case. Detectives talked to a man whose cell phone was the last number dialed from Vogel’s phone. According to police, the man claimed he does not know Vogel and that his phone was stolen before she disappeared. Just before Vogel’s disappearance, she sent a text message to a friend saying she was “meeting with the locals” in the Pauwela Lighthouse area on Maui’s North Shore. She has not been heard from since. If you have any information on this case, call Maui police or the private tip line at 888-524-0218. |

http://www.starbulletin.com/news/20100502_...ragic_past.html Site where woman vanished has tragic past By Rob Shikina As the search goes on for Laura Vogel, a Maui woman who disappeared two months ago while camping at the Pauwela Lighthouse, new attention is being given to an earlier disappearance in the same area. Astara Evenstar disappeared on Jan. 10, 2004, when she was 15. Evenstar, a student at Baldwin High School, was hanging out with friends at the lighthouse, police said. Her friends saw her talking on a cell phone near the cliff's edge. About two minutes later, she vanished. No sign of her has ever been found, police said. Other things have gone wrong there. » In 2000, an intoxicated man apparently walked off the cliff and fell to his death. » In 2006, a teenager died after he was apparently run over during a fight. Maui Lt. John Jakubczak said the spot doesn't have a bad reputation, although homeless have lived in the area for about 20 years. The lighthouse sits on a cliff about 80 to 100 feet above rocks that are covered by seawater during high tide. Vogel's family hopes one day they can bring home their beloved 43-year-old daughter, a Maui tutor with a master's degree in wildlife biology. About 20 family friends will search again at 10 this morning. Vogel's mother Joan Vogel, of New Mexico, said she heard about the other girl and mysterious deaths. "You wonder," she said. "That's all you can do. You got to wonder what kind of element is there." Vogel wants to find out what happened to her daughter so it doesn't happen to someone else. "We don't want anybody else to go through what we've been going through," she said. When she recently visited the lighthouse, she found it "absolutely beautiful," she said. A photographer was shooting photos of a model, dress blowing in the wind. But after sunset, the atmosphere changed. "At night, it turns into something completely different," she said. "I guess there is a lot of drugs." Vogel was an experienced outdoorswoman—an avid backpacker, hiker and surfer—and likely didn't stumble off the cliff, her mother said. The night before she was reported missing, Vogel talked with her mother by phone. She spoke excitedly about her brother visiting Hawaii, a new house-sitting job and her camping experience. "She was just really upbeat and looking forward to everything," her mother said. Vogel later texted a friend that she was "meeting all the locals." Friends reported her missing after she didn't show up for a tutoring job the next morning, Feb. 22. The ensuing search has been extensive, with dogs, drones, divers, helicopters, horses, personal watercraft and four-wheelers. Vogel's van was found about 200 yards from the lighthouse, near a homeless camp, with her camping gear inside. Her wallet and cell phone were never found, but part of a phone similar to hers was discovered nearby. With a lack of evidence of foul play or that she fell, police will "continue to look into this until we can find out what happened to her," Jakubczak said. Vogel also dialed a number the night she disappeared. The number belonged to a man who said he had lost his phone weeks before. Police said they don't have any new leads. |
